Great afternoon in the Club last Saturday as the Under 14 league win was followed by a great win for the Division 4 Adult hurling team.
Adult games
The local derby v Clontarf in the adult hurling league took place on Saturday evening in the Club. Our lads were slow to get into the game, allowing Clontarf an early lead of 1-6 to 0-1. However, once we got into our stride there was a big turnaround in the score and the game was won by a margin of 10 points at the final whistle. The comeback was led by Barry Cushen who converted frees including two goals, Andy Bunyan with some fantastic long range points and Neil O’Flynn who added a goal at a crucial stage. Excellent performances also by Killian Linnane and Sean Kirwan and super sub Michael Mc Cluskey. This was a very strong performance by the whole team considering that regulars including Conor Coady, Joe Ryan and Adam Wilson were rested for this game. Next game is on Wednesday 21st Oct as we continue to push for a home promotion play off game.
Under 18 girls Naomh Barrog2 – 11 Scoil0 – 10
It was a case of a missed opportunity for the Scoil girls after a keenly contested championship semi final played in ideal conditions at Pairc Barrog on Saturday afternoon last.
The visitors enjoyed long periods of dominance in this game but failed to make it count on the scoreboard. Scoil kicked 15 wides and many of them were goal opportunities that should have been taken. In contrast Naomh Barrog were highly efficient in front of the posts and their two well taken first half goals gave them the platform to progress to the final.
Despite leaving their shooting boots at home no one present could deny that the Scoil girls gave 100% throughout the hour and the big Scoil support showed their warm appreciation at the end of the game. The Scoil panel on the day ; Sheena Devine, Riona Phelan, Caoimhe Fennessey, Maeve Power, Orlaith Egan, Emily McMullen, Grace Redmond, Caroline Lee, Oilbhe Nathan, Sally Ann Cherry, Naoise Ni Bhroinn, Ciara Mc Comish, Megan Kavanagh, Molly Power, Lorna Meade, Kathy Delaney, Hannah Costello, Emma Condon, Aisling O’Leary, Ellen Crimmins.
Next weekend it’s back to Adult football league games with two important fixtures. On Saturday, the Division 2 team travel to Palmerston to play St Patrick’s at 5pm. Then on Sunday, the AFL8 team welcome Ballyboughal to Clontarf as they move close to promotion in the Division.

Juveniles
Nursery / Naoinra – update 14th Oct
A plea to parents from Nursery Volunteers
Due to the growing popularity of our nursery and an increase in the number of players, you will notice some changes in the coming weeks as we try to ensure appropriate, fun and challenging activities for all age groups and abilities. This may include additional stations which will stretch our coaching resources.
It would greatly help the children and volunteers if some parents were willing to step forward to help out. Even if you have never played GAA, there are a number of very simple things that would make a big difference on Saturday mornings e.g:
- Assist with crowd control to ensure kids are ready to take their go (and not sitting in tyres or otherwise distracted).
- Act as a ‘train driver’ to direct kids from station to station.
- Before the hurling session, help the children to put on helmets and have the correct size hurley.
- Closely watch your own child to make sure their strong hand is always at the top the hurley (this is the single most important skill that we try to teach in the nursery).
If you are interested in helping to make the nursery more enjoyable and challenging for our kids, speak to Joanne or any of the volunteers. Go raibh maith agat
Under 8s
JP – “Tough As Teak” U8 Hurlers were away to Finbars GAA on Saturday morning and were absolutely superb! (Played 4/Won 4).
Team Liam/Jp Update: As usual Adam Ryan was pulling the strings in midfield resulting in some great individual scores, including a point also. However I was more impressed with how he worked tirelessly, to provide numerous scoring chances/assists for his team mates with most of our kids getting on the score sheet, because of his efforts (Always good to put on a show at your Grandad’s Club lol). Move of the day for me though was Alex’s sideline ball to Charlie, who smashed it home – Great move & finish. Conal/Neill/Nathan/Sophie/Ella/Sadhbh & Tadhg more than did their bit to seal two comfortable wins – Well Done!!
Update from Team Ronan/ Dave Daly; “They were great. Diarmuid cleared a huge amount of ball in defence and was brave after getting a knock. Caoimhe and Eabha scored two and three goals respectively. Conal, Raphael stood up and played really well when Alan was on the bench and Fionn in goal. Alex Culligan and Liam tried hard, keeping opposition busy. Alan and Fionn were very good also”
Under 14 Football, League Final Scoil 3-13 St Peregrines 3-8
Last Saturday the Scoil U14 team faced St Peregrines in their final league match of the season -the match would decide who would finish top of the league – and the match certainly lived up to all expectations. With a full turnout, bar a couple of key injuries, the Scoil lads were all set for the encounter. The first half saw Scoil power into a solid lead in spite of some dubious decisions and the fact the referee had misplaced his coloured cards. The first half closed with Scoil comfortably ahead 3-7 to 1-3. Not long into the second half Kyle, the Scoil goalkeeper, took a hard knock but recovered well and kept his team in the battle as Peregrines fought to get back into the game. A nail-biting final few minutes saw Scoil stand firm and hold on to finish victorious, 3-13 to 3-8. This was a great win for a great team, and there were emotional scenes on the sideline. Killian, Ciarán and Neil are immensely proud of what has been achieved this year – promotion here we come! (Neil)
Special mention for all the players, their families, supporters and especially for the management team of Killian O’Connell, Ciaran Bohan and Neil McDermott who have worked tirelessly and enthusiastically to secure promotion for this team. The lads enjoyed their pizzas in the Clubhouse after the game – well deserved!

A great win for the Under 14 girls in their championship game on Sunday afternoon.
Under 16 Football League Ballinteer St John’s 0-8 Scoil /Clans 1-10
This was an eventful football game last Saturday as the lads moved back into second place in the league with one game left to play. Jordan was the key to the win and provided some excellent finishing and also took over free taking duties in Robert Kennedy’s absence. Great performances also from Odhrán O’Sullivan and Eoghan McKay who worked throughout the game and especially during the last 10 minutes as we were down to 13 men following two double yellow cards! Another tense finish in this game but the win was secured and it’s all to play for in the final game.
Under 16 Hurling Championship Final – Sat 17th Oct
We’re delighted that the Under 16s, the combined Scoil Uí Chonaill / Clanna Gael team, are featuring in the B Hurling Championship final on Saturday. The game takes place in O’Toole Park, which along with Parnell Park, is the designated County Ground of the Dublin County Board. Having beaten Raheny in the Semi Final the lads are looking forward to featuring in a County Final. All support for this game would be very much appreciated by the players and management!

Juvenile/Family Membership Subscriptions
The new Juvenile and Family membership year is upon us. The year runs from October 2015 to end September 2016.
Membership fees are €90 for Juveniles and €250 for Families (i.e. 2 parents/guardians and their children aged under 18). The fees go towards Coaching costs, registration, insurance, equipment and other expenses.
Subscriptions can be paid online at www.scoilgaaa.com , in the Clubhouse on each Saturday morning in October or directly to your team mentor. We will have a special desk in the Club on Saturday morning next to facilitate payment and any enquires.
Forms are available in the Clubhouse or from your mentor.
Sports Grant Announcement
More good news for Scoil …
The 2015 Sports Capital Programme has just been announced and we’ve been allocated €139k towards our dressing room & gym refurbishment. Many thanks to the team involved in the application. There are lots of hoops and red tape to be navigated through before the project can commence but it’s great to know that we have secured the funds for the next phase of our Club development. We will be putting a team in place to manage this project and as always volunteers would be very welcome to lend their support.
