Meet Ross Bissett

The Scoil resident brewer, meet the man whose eye contact gets him into trouble and is always a bit of a giraffe...Ross Bissett!

The Scoil resident brewer, meet the man whose eye contact gets him into trouble and is always a bit of a giraffe…Ross Bissett!

How long have you been involved in Scoil Uí Chonaill?
About 7 years

Do you have any nicknames? How do you like to be addressed?
No nicknames thankfully…Ross works fine!

Where do you hail from?
I hail from Artane & I’m in the middle of renovating our new home in Clontarf, just to be closer to Scoil!

How did you come to be involved in Scoil?
I started bringing my eldest son Josh down, this was soon followed by Charlie a couple of years later too – Isobella looks a bit more into singing and dancing but so are a few of my U11 kids so that shouldn’t stop her!

Briefly describe your Scoil career as a player / mentor / contributor, if any.
I once made eye contact with Finbarr while Josh was training in the early years. That eye contact turned into holding a tackle bag which then turned into helping out each week. That somehow turned into me managing the now U11 boys team, doing text outs, arranging logistics & washing jerseys each week! Lesson to all newbies…Never make eye contact.

What would you say you are most known for within Scoil? i.e. what do people associate you with?
You’d need to ask other people really. I’d say it’s my warmth and friendliness coupled with my boy next door good looks but again that’s just me…Better to ask other people J

What has been your greatest Scoil moment / achievement?
I’d have to say seeing our U11s go from being beaten and battered most weeks last season to going unbeaten this season(apart from last week). Not just the winning but the improvement in players, team work & general buzz about the team is great!

What is your profession / field of study / passion?
I run a drinks business which many of our members will be familiar with as they enjoy tasty pints of 5 Lamps in the club bar. I’ve a brewery in Dublin (5 Lamps) & am about to launch another one in Clonmel (Dowd’s Lane), we also distribute craft beers for other brewers. Fun industry at the moment!

What are your favourite hobbies outside of GAA?
It won’t go down well in a GAA questionnaire but I absolutely love watching my 2 boys playing soccer for Raheny United on a Sunday and generally enjoying that family time. Then watching my beloved Liverpool FC – next year could be our year! I also enjoy walking & running to clear the head. I love the hills of Howth on a nice day.

If you could make one addition to Scoil in any way (don’t be restricted by the plausible!), what would it be?
A bigger, better flood lit all weather pitch along with a nice outdoor deck/terrace on our bar – one could fund the other perhaps!

What is your favourite Scoil ‘quirk’?
JP Courtney. Say no more.

If you close your eyes and envisage Scoil in 10 years, what do you see?
A successful club both on and off the pitch that’s as open and welcoming as the day I first joined with a great community spirit full of great people.

Finally, if you had to describe yourself as an animal, what would it be and why?
I never know how to answer these questions as I never really think of myself as an animal…I suppose a giraffe due to my height?

Adult Hurling

AHL3 vs Erins Isle – 8th July 2017

On a beautiful Saturday night in perfect conditions for hurling, SCOIL played Isles in a top of the table clash.

SCOIL played with the slight breeze in the first half but it was isles who started better and it was the 11th minute before SCOIL took the lead 4-3. Isles tacked on 7 points to our 4 before half time, to lead 11 to 8 at half time.

Isles started the second half well and opened. 6 point lead by the 45th minute. SCOIL were awarded a penalty and Barry scored a goal through a wall of defenders to reduce the gap to 3, Barry reduced the gap to 2 which prompted Isles to tack on 3 more points to our one.

Final score SCOIL 1:11 to 0:18.

Scorers on the night were

Barry 1:6, Podge Naughton, Andy, Ruairi, Neil & Conor 1 point each.

IHC vs Cuala – 5th July 2017

This was the final group game of this years Inter championship, as both teams had already qualified for the knockout stages the prize at stake was home advantage in the knockout phase.

The game was played in near perfect conditions in Scoil. Cuala played with the wind in the first half and immediately took the lead. As had happened against Clontarf in the previous game Scoil bounced back with a bang and we scored 2 goals in quick succession from Andy & Joe to have us leading by 6 within 10 minutes. We had 5 scorers in the first half and led comfortably by 2:8 to 6 points at the break. Half time came at a good time for Cuala as Scoil were totally dominant even playing against the breeze. The breeze was not proving to be helpful to Cuala as they clocked up 8 wides in the first half.

The second half started as the first had ended, with Scoil in total control, Scoil tacked on another 3:8 in the second half. Those watching the game felt sorry for the crossbar when Daire scored his goal, had the sliothar not hit it it was reckoned it would have landed somewhere on Castle Avenue.  Our defence held firm so much so that Cuala only troubled Danny once in the second half.

The final score was Scoil 5:16 Cuala 0:12.

Scorers Joe 1:3, Andy 1:2, Barry 0:4, Ruairi & Neil 0:3, Padraig Kinsella, Ger, & Daire Ryan 1 goal each & Eoin O Carroll 0:1.

Minor Boys

Good week at the office for the minors this week!

Our MFL3 match on Wednesday 5th July was a home fixture against Round Towers Clondalkin and we played it in Ringsend Park. It was a tight enough affair in the first half and the team had to work hard to eventually pull away and come out winners with a final scoreline of 3-13 to 0-9 to Scoil.

Sunny Sunday morning saw us travel to Bohernabreena to play St. Annes in the final match of the MFL3 group. Again, the team had to put in a tough shift to earn their win with the final score 2-12 to 1-5 to Scoil.

Special thanks to all the supporters who came out to St. Annes on Sunday morning to cheer us on.

This leaves us top of the group with the maximum 18 points having won all our matches and puts us through to the football league semi-final against the runners-up of MFL3 North. No date has been set for the fixture as yet.

Upcoming fixtures:-

Thursday 13th July MHL2 home game vs Faughs in Scoil at 7.30pm

Sunday 16th July MHL2 away game vs Ballyboden at 11am.

Juvenile girls u10 – u14s

There was a fitness and skills session completed for close to 40 girls that measured speed and skills and all girls were given a copy of their results for the summer. The skills captured in this first session were soloing with both feet, hand passing with both hands, kick length and various sprint distances.

This was great fun for the girls but also gave the girls going away for the summer something tangible to work on as the session will be revisited in mid / late August again to see how far the girls have improved and they can check against their results as they practice.

There are still a few to do the initial session and they can contact Aidan to schedule asap. We are also having open training sessions for u10 – u15 girls on most Tuesdays and Weds evenings from 7.15-8.15 in the club for any looking to keep their fitness up.
