Appeal for retro jersey
Last week we included a letter from Ramona regarding 1969 Scoil Hurler Liam Blood. By utter chance, this week Liam sent his own letter (Liam was not a recipient of this newsletter until now!)
We are appealing to any members who may have a spare original Scoil jersey (you know the ones; plain, heavy and oozing with history) to please do the honourable and donate it to Liam who was part of such an important team, just as this generation’s seeks to do similar.
See below the letter received from Liam:
The search for the Jersey
I really don’t know where to start this story. Let me first introduce myself. My name is Liam Blood and I represented ‘The Scoil’, as I always addressed them, from around 1960–1972 when I emigrated to USA.
In the course of my career with The Scoil I was very fortunate to have had some success and met a lot of brilliant sportsmen. But more on that later, lets go back to the search.
I have always had a place in my heart for that beautiful and unique jersey and was determined to get one for myself to wear with pride just as I wear the Dubs jersey. So in May 2016 when my daughters asked me what I wanted for my upcoming June birthday, it struck me that now was the time to get it. So I told them I wanted to get The Scoil jersey, thinking in my naivety that they could just go out to The Scoil shop and buy one. Oh boy, how wrong I was! There started the search for the jersey…….
My eldest daughter Aoife, a primary school teacher took on the responsibility of getting the jersey. She took a trip out to Clontarf thinking she would just collect a jersey and scratch Dad of the birthday present list. Unfortunately things didn’t work out the way shethought they would and she was told that she would have to wait until the club were ordering new gear, with no date promised. Well that birthday is long passed and the next one also and it wasn’t until this August when she got in touch again and was dealing with Mr Dominic Morgan. Well one thing let to another and it was eventually agreed that he would meet her in the Club House at 10 o’clock on a given date. Aoife decided she would cycle from her home in Tallaght to Clontarf in the morning to collect the jersey only to find the premises locked up. She phoned Dominic to find out what had gone wrong only to find it was 10.00pm he had meant. So the search still went on. The poor man ended up going to Aoifes home in Tallaght to deliver the jersey. Thank you very much Dominic.
So we thought that after 15 months the search had come to an end, unfortunately they didnt bargain on my stubbornness and I dislike the jersey with the advertising and round neck. So the search goes on. However, I will wear it with pride for the moment. The jersey got its first official outing at Mobhi Rd on Saturday the 16th September when the intermediate hurlers were to play Na Fianna in the championship semi final, a game that could make them a senior outfit next season if victorious. It was a real coincidence as the most memorable game I played for The Scoil was an intermediate final in 1969 which sent us senior. Unfortunately on this miserable wet September Saturday the ref failed to show and the game was postponed. So there I am standing on the wet embankment when I feel a pair of inquisitive eyes sizing me up a quick glance over my shoulder andmy eye is caught by this pretty young lady and a conversation begins.
To be continued next week. In the meantime should any of my old team mates be reading this I would love to hear from them at lpblood@gmail.com

A Tribute: Patrick ‘Patch’ McVeigh
In respect to the memory of Scoil legend Patrick ‘Patch’ McVeigh the popular ‘Meet the Members’ article will be replaced with a note about the man who did it all for the Club. Patch can be seen here on the far left proudly wearing a Scoil supporters top and enjoying a laugh with his former teammates at the recent reunion of the ’86 Dublin SFC winning team.
Patch joined Scoil from Clann Colaiste Mhuire in the early seventies and fulfilled practically every role within the Club over a period of over 45 years, mentor of several teams over many years, Chairman, Secretary, Fundraiser, Social Committee Chairman, Juvenile Chairman etc.
Patch, a fluent Irish speaker, played a significant role in Scoil’s two Senior Football championship wins in 1983 and again in 1986 playing at centre half back and, apart from being a great player, he was a huge inspiration to the younger members of the panel. Patch also got a run with the Great Dublin Team of the 70’s and a fact that not too many people know, he is the holder of a national football league medal from 1978. Patch also spent a stint running the Dublin minor football team .
Patch was the classic all-rounder and had many strings to his bow (guitar!). A fantastic guitar player, finger picking style, and blessed with a beautiful deep mellow voice many members of the Club particularly – those from the 80’s and 90’s – will look back with great fondness on the social nights in the Club when Patch entertained for hours on end with wide variety of ballads and anti war songs of Bob Dylan —The Universal Soldier and Blowing the Wind! A great favourite was Dante loved the Summer Sun.
On behalf of the Club, we offer our deepest condolences to his wife Mary, daughters Aisling and Roisin, sisters Maire, Monica & Eilis and brother Proinsias, Eamonn and Donall.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Intermediate Hurling
The hurlers played the third last fixture of the league knowing that we needed to keep up the pressure on the teams ahead of us. We played Crokes in Silverpark on Saturday in windy conditions and racked up one of our highest scores in years to the delight of the team and supporters. Fair to say the game was over as a contest 20 minutes in. We had ten scorers on the day including all 6 starting forwards, considering the windy conditions we only had 7 wides which was a great return.
Scorers on the day
Barry 0-10, Podge Naughton 2-2, Mick Mc Cluskey 1-3, Neil 1-1, Joe 1-0, Ruairi 0-2, Padraig Kinsella 0-3, 1 point each for Alastair, Andy & Eoin O Carroll
e hope that the championship will be played on Saturday th October subjecting to confirmation.

Under 15 girls
Championship v Castleknock 23-9-2017 pitch 22
How it all played out;
This was the proverbial game of two halves. A very strong wind favoured Scoil who were playing downhill in the first half. An opening goal by Siofra M set us up for a scoring blitz. The half time score of 5,10 to 2.2. said it all. The second half was a different story however with the girls only managing two points while wind favoured Castleknock started scoring. The question was whether or not we could hold out. We did and finished 5.12 to 3.9 very good for our score average.
Who were the star performers
Caoimhe K was, as usual our chief scorer. It was great to see Ella De Brun back in Scoil colours and getting a nice point. In the second half however it was the backs who showed their skill as they held out determinedly against an improving Castleknock side. Dogged defending ensured this win, making it three out of four for our under 1`5’s
What’s up next
We play near rivals Clontarf on the 5th October time yet to be agreed.

U14 / U15 Girls
Scoil under 14 and under 15 squads were amongst the 46,000 odd present in Croke Park on Sunday. Our girls were there with a mission. We had been asked by the Board to get girls to distribute flags before the big game. At 11am 21 girls and nine parents as mentors attended and spent the whole day at Croker. The girls wore Scoil jerseys and were a credit to the club. The fact that the Dubs won was the icing on the cake of a very long day out. Well done to our girls and to the parents especially Martina who ensured that all the jerseys came back and to Larry who was our chief co-ordinator for the day.

U10 Hurling
How it all played out;
Scoil U10 Hurlers entertained Setanta this afternoon. Due to shortage of numbers, opposition only had one team. This logistical nightmare required Liam Ryan to be on top of his game as he juggled the players available to ensure all saw sufficient pitch time.
Match definitely had a bite to it, as Setanta laid down early marker with a well worked team goal. Opposition were very competitive as expected and lads had to be very alert and full on to bring game level. Thankfully Scoil found their groove and started to take charge. Little Conal Kenny as a constant thorn up front today.
Unfortunately the game took a nasty turn when opposition player decided to use his hands rather than hurl and was deservedly was red carded.
Despite the charitable nature of Liam in allowing him to return second half, the poor lad couldn’t handle the constant successes Scoil were having in getting Sliothar forward and decided to clean poor Fionn D out of it (his Dad Dave Daly was surely thinking he was going to be joined on the crutches by his son!) – earning his Second Red Card! Some choice words towards one of our players as he left the pitch was bang out of order also – thankfully Ref will address in his match report!!
Who were the star performers
Everyone of them but on individual basis Conal & Fionn were our stand out players. Well worked goal from Alex, Diarmuid & Fionn was great to see also. Delighted to see the composure shown by our lads in face of off & on ball antics – Win Lose or Draw they never drop the standards set!! Conal(Twin) very gratefully agreed to play for U12’s and scored in well earned draw v Maurs – Well Done Conal.

Camogie u9
How it all played out
We made the journey to Rathcoole on Sunday morning with two teams to play a blitz against Commercials and Clontarf. Both teams played two matches and put in powerful performances in all four matches.
Who were the star performers / scorers
Again there was a notable improvement in skills and a big increase in scores from the hand from several players and also some great clearances from defence. Of course the usual determination was shown around the field and it would be impossible to single out any player for effort. Score of the day was a fantastic goal from a puck out from her own goal by Caoimhe (it must be the Limerick influence).
What’s up next
Back to the big ball next week away at Ballymun Sunday at 10am.

u8 Hurlers
Scoil Uí Chonaill Vs Erin’s isle @home 23/09/2017
Our under 8 hurlers competed against a strong opposition in Erin’s Isle on Saturday.
How it all played out
The minute the sliotar was thrown in, it was clear that it was going to be a tough competitive game. Both teams giving it all. While our mighty U8s kept going until the last play, it wasn’t to be our day. There were plenty of moments to be inspired by and skills to savour though. Our goalkeepers had plenty of opportunity to puck out from the hands and they showed their “air” hurling practice is paying off. There were also a couple of great goals from long distance. Despite the skills on show, the games were a lesson in the need to earn the right to play through toughness and competitiveness. All 7 players on the pitch need to be brave and battle hard at the same time. In training we’ll be looking to imbue them with a little of the strength and energy of the stag until November is out!
As always the U8’s put on a mighty show for all the parents and supporters. Well done for the effort and commitment.
Who were the star performers / scorers
For the Ambers, Conall defended brilliantly and demonstrated tremendous skill throughout. Striking the ball from side to side. Up front, Shay was determined and resilient. Aisling in goals got great distance in her puck outs. The midfielders showed great promise and skill and put the opposition under pressure.
For the Maroon’s Jamie and Sean hit some marvelous puck outs from the hand. The most stirring performance of the day came from Cody. After a disappointing first half in the second game by the team, Cody came out like a man possessed for the second half and on numerous occasions, through sheer strength of will, kept play in the opposition half.
Finally for the Blues, the team was put to the test in the second match when Noah had to depart early. There was some great striking of the moving sliotar from the defence by Riain, while Aoibhinn scored a great goal from 20 metres out. Abigale and Emily, meanwhile, were everywhere on the pitch getting stuck in fearlessly.
What’s up next
Football next Saturday, at home to St Sylvesters, meeting @10 a.m. sharp
