HURL WITH ME

he mentors to the U9’s and U10’s girls teams are delighted to announce that our application to participate in The Camogie Association’s “Hurl with Me” programme has been successful. Scoil is one of 32 clubs to be selected from over 200 applicants.

“Hurl with Me” is a 4 week programme to teach parents some of the basic hurling skills in a fun and supportive environment. The Camogie Association provide an accredited coach to demonstrate the skills to parents for 4 weeks, in training sessions alongside the girls.

At the end of the 4 weeks a national “Hurl with Me” Day will take place on July 1st at the GAA National Gaelic Development Centre in Abbottstown for all selected clubs. This will be a really fun, family day out and a great social occasion for all.

This is a great opportunity for parents to get behind the team and enjoy Camogie with their daughter. We look forward to everyone getting involved.

I joined the Mothers and Others originally then joined the Ladies team after a few months.

What is your favourite sporting moment/sportsperson?
Ireland winning this year’s grand slam.

What was the funniest thing that has happened to you in Scoil?
Meeting my other half, probably.

If Scoil was a country, what would it be and why?
Ireland, small but mighty.

What would you say you are most known for within Scoil?
I have not a clue!

What has been your greatest Scoil moment / achievement?
The Ladies B team winning a match for the first time two weeks ago.

I’m an Irish teacher.

The Under 14 Girls Féile is due to take place this Saturday, 19th of May in St Pat’s Donabate. The girls first match will begin at 10:30, followed by matches @ 11:30 & 12:30. All support during the day greatly appreciated.
The birthday celebrations of Spud Murphy, due to take place this Saturday in the Clubhouse have unfortunately been cancelled. Spud’s family sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and hope to reschedule later in the Summer.

IN SUMMARY

The Senior Footballers also took home a well deserved win following their game against Whitehall Colmcilles on Wednesday evening.
A superb last minute goal secured a great win for our first Ladies Team against Naomh Barróg last Wednesday evening.
Under 16 Girls sail away with a 10 goal win against St Anne’s on Sunday.
Under 15 Girls emerge as worthy winner following a brilliant performance against St Pat’s Donabate.
Under 14 Hurlers earned a well deserved win in St. Anne’s last Thursday after a fantastic game of hurling against Cuala.
Scoil Academy had their first outing of the year in Beann Eadair on Saturday morning.
The Nursery continue to train in Scoil every Saturday morning from 9:30am – 11am. All newcomers welcome as always!

LADIES DIVISION 3

v Naomh Barrog 09/05/2018

Naomh Barrog 2-13 Scoil Ui Chonaill 3-11

A one point win for the adult ladies team, does not give the full story of the drama and excitement of the final moments of the game. Trailing by 7 points with five minutes remaining, the players never gave up their efforts were rewarded with a goal from Sinead De Burca with the last kick of the game.

Naomh Barrog dominated the early stages of the game, racing into a 2-3 to 0-1 lead with just 10 minutes played. A fine run from defence by Kathy Delaney found Sinead De Burca as she crossed the ball into Sophie Gibney, who gathered, and despite being pulled to the ground, managed to poke the ball passed the keeper to bring Scoil into the game. The teams traded scores at each end, before Lucy Murphy hit 3 unanswered points to give Scoil the momentum going into the second half, albeit trailing 2-9 to 1-7.

The momentum continued into the second half, with Scoil having found their feet in defence, with good tackling and crucial saves from Hannah Costello. Molly Power, Hannah Leahy and Caelinn Ni Bhroin burst into life in the second half setting up a number of quick counter attacks, which provided fruitful to the Scoil forwards, only hitting 6 wides in the entire game.

Into the final 5 minutes, Scoil’s intensity continued to grow. Forwards running at pace were able to win frees, which Sinead De Burca put over the bar to put 6 between the sides. On the next kickout Lucy Murphy won a breaking ball and quickly looped the ball back over the defence. It looked to be dropping into the keeper’s hands, before Hannah Leahy leaped up from out of nowhere to palm the ball into the net.

Scoil were to go on to win a 14 metre free with 30 seconds left on the clock. Sinead put the ball over the bar, trusting her teammates to get one more opportunity to win the game. Scoil pushed high on the next kickout, which was again won by Lucy Murphy, when worked across to Aoife De Burca 25 yards from goal, she was fouled to win yet another free. With the ref saying this would be the last kick, Sinead lined up a shot that looped in over everyone’s head to find the top corner of the Barrog net.

Full time whistle went and Scoil came out deserving victors. A fantastic team performance from the entire squad of 17 on the day, with each player making a significant impact.

UNDER 16 GIRLS

v St. Annes, Boharnabreena 13/5/2018

20 enthusiastic girls turned out for this match again St. Anne’s who could only field 12. So, Paul agreed with the ref to roll them on and off so that everyone would have a chance to play. We started as we meant to go on with 2 goals from Caoimhe followed by one from Sadhbh. Ella joined in by adding two quick points Caoimhe decided to increase her tally by two more goals while Aine also slotted one into the net. St. Anne’s could only respond to this onslaught with three points.

In the second half Anne’s looked for a short while as though they were going to make a match of it with a goal and 4 points, but Siofra M got into scoring form too and we kept adding goals and points and it was all over for St. Anne’s. It has to be said took their beating in good form although we all felt sorry for their poor goalie. Who wouldn’t when Scoil beat them by 12.10 to 3.7?

It says a lot for the commitment of these girls most of whom are under 14 and fifteen that they continue to turn out for games both Saturday and Sunday while eight also trained for Feile. Time is running out for the three remaining matches in the league as we cancelled a game against Lucan because of Féile but we are going to try to fit in St. Vincents and Fingal Ravens so folks watch this space.

UNDER 15 GIRLS

v St. Pats Donabate 12/5/2018

The sunshine really seems to inspire our girls and Saturday in Donabate was no exception. They gave a brilliant performance in this the last game of the under 15 league ably abetted by Realtin Sorcha and Therese from the under 13’s From the moment the ball was thrown in they were in control and by half time all we were worried about was whether they would fall to pieces in the second half. We needn’t have worried although Pats made a more determined effort in the second half our girls stood their ground and emerged as worthy winners 3.9 to 1.2

It always easy to praise those who score and as usual Siofra M, Holly, Aoibheann and Sadhbh were on target. You couldn’t though forget the hard work of the other girls who gave a real team display and made it easy for the forwards. We thought that we would have a hard job beating Pats but they made it look a canter. Coming second in division four in your first year in that division is no mean feat. You did all Brian and Paul asked you to do and we were all so proud of you. Well done girls.

UNDER 14 BOYS HURLING

v Cuala 10/05/2018

Scoil earned a well deserved two points on pitch 22 at St Anne’s last Thursday. It was a fantastic game of hurling with both sides performing at a high standard. Scoil had a lot of the possession but let Cuala back into contention near the end of game but some fine saves and scoring got Scoil over the line in the end.

UNDER 10 BOYS FOOTBALL

v Beann Eadair 19/05/2018

The Under 10 boys had a tough day at a beautiful sunny Beann Eadair. With a few kids missing we were only able to muster 12 kids so had to borrow a couple from the opposition.

Team Brendan with 6 of our kids (Jake, Cillian, Conor M, Evan, Isaac and Seoirse) played well throughout the game but were outclassed in the end. Jake up front combined very well with Conor and Seiorse to score a couple of great points while Isaac and Cillian kept the scoreline respectable through some great tackling and blocking while under constant pressure from the opposition.

Team Cormac with the other 6 kids (David, Temi, Paddy, Calum, Ruairi, Conor K) was a similar story being outclassed by strong opposition. Conor K and David preformed very well in goals with some great saves and getting distance off the kickouts. Paddy put in some really hard work in the midfield winning and keeping pocession. Ruairi scored a great goal with the last kick of the game.

Next up a hurling game against Shankill in Shanganagh on Saturday at 10am.

UNDER 9 BOYS FOOTBALL

v Na Fianna 12/5/2018

Between weather cancellations and communions it’s been a couple of months since the u9s last played a football match, so Saturday morning’s game would provide novelty if nothing else! We welcomed Na Fianna to Clontarf Rd.

There was some rustiness on show, but overall the performances from Scoil were really impressive and the kids can be very proud of themselves. One thing they all need to be aware of is the need to bend low and lift the ball from the ground with the toe. Each of our teams gave away a lot of soft frees when not lifting the ball correctly off the ground. This is something to focus on in training.

The Blues played out a cracking match that drew crowds in from the adjacent car park. Some say the cheers could be heard from Croke Park. Brodie put in a dominant performance covering acres of ground, winning possession and distributing it well. Faolán took up clever positions in space up front and kicked some long accurate scores. We’ve seen Faolán stay after training to practice his kicking, so his ability to stick the ball over the bar is no coincidence. Cody was a rock in defence and Dennis too showed how fast his skills are developing. Conor McCormack, during a stint in goals, took some great kick outs. There were great contributions from all other members of the team.

The Maroons put in a great team display too. All 9 did their jobs on the field and supported each other. Conán helped himself to a few great scores. He has clearly been working on his solo and this helped him to burst past players to take a number of great scores. Abigail’s long elegant kicks kept the pressure on the Na Fianna defence, while Aodh executed the best block down of the game pushing right down on the foot of an opponent as practiced in training. Cian and Conall complemented accurate passing out of defence with tigerish tackles getting a strong near hand in.

The Amber team experienced a tough morning. We had been warned beforehand that the Na Fianna team they would be playing had been dominant all year and we could see why. They had a bunch of strong, skilful players who played with awareness and accuracy well beyond their years. They were able to switch play with long foot passes from one side of the pitch to the other and curl balls over the bar from out near the side-line. In contrast, in the first half, the Ambers ignored marking and in some cases ignored their positions altogether, leading to a flurry of scores for Na Fianna. However at half time we regrouped, set ourselves some targets and agreed to mark tightly. James, having switched to play in goals gave us a great platform, dominating his area and gaining territory with long kickouts. Matthew cleverly found space and used his pace to get a couple of great scores. Sean made electric runs up the right wing, curling over a couple of nice points. If he works on his left foot solo, he’ll keep the opposition guessing as he’d be able to dash up the left wing too! Jamie, Tadhg and Caoimhe marked tightly at the back slowing the Na Fianna flood to a trickle. The coaches couldn’t be prouder of the spirit shown by the team to come back in that second half.

Well done to all the kids – remember, practise a little at home every week.

This week, its Na Fianna at home again at 11 a.m. – this time in Hurling.

SCOIL NURSERY

Scoil Academy (kids born in 2011) travelled to Howth to play Beann Eadair last Saturday. At the request of Beann Eadair, the boys played hurling and the girls played football. This was our first outing of the year and it was a great opportunity to see how the group were progressing.

Boys
We had 2 boys teams and played 2 matches against Beann Eadair. Both teams played brilliantly with great striking and blocking skills on show. The skills honed during the winter in the OCBS hall and Gormanston clearly stood to us.

Girls
Despite this being the first time the girls played as a team it never showed. The girls were straight out of the blocks and never stopped in the 3 games they
played. Scores came from all players and the range of skills on show was amazing with points scored by foot and by hand. We never stopped tackling and running.

There was a great support provided by parents and family on the day and was much appreciated by the players and coaches. We are looking forward to more great displays in our next games against Whitehall. Thanks to all in Beann Eadair for a great welcome and a well organised event. Both girls and boys coaches from Beann Eadair were very complimentary of the skills and behaviour of the Scoil Teams.

Monday night training continues for kids born in 2011 in the club from 7pm to 8pm and will continue until the summer break. This, is in addition to the
usual Saturday morning training at 9.30am.

Scoil Nursery
There was also a great turnout to Scoil Nursery last Saturday. It was great to see parents joining in with training last Saturday and everyone is free to help out anytime. Congrats to our players of the week. As always new players are welcome to join in and have fun. Nursery continues as usual for everyone this Saturday morning at 9.30am.
