MEET DEIRDRE EGAN
How long have you been involved in Scoil Uí Chonaill?
I’ve been involved in the club as long as I remember. I was brought down to the nursery as soon as I could walk!
Do you have any nicknames? How do you like to be addressed?
My pals call me Deegan but normally just Deirdre on the pitch.
Where do you hail from?
Born and bred in Raheny but I wouldn’t go near Raheny GAA club!
How did you come to be involved in Scoil?
My Dad Richie has been involved in the club since his school days in O’Connells and my mum Niamh also played camogie with Scoil so it was inevitable that I would be part of the club.
Briefly describe your Scoil career as a player / mentor / contributor, if any.
I’ve been through the ranks of the juvenile teams and I am now playing with the Ladies division 7 team. It’s the first year in a while that the ladies have had a second team and it’s great to be a part of it. I’ve dabbled a small bit over the years in helping out at the summer camps and the with the nursery on Saturday mornings.
What is your favourite sporting moment/sportsperson?
Kevin McManamon’s legendary goal against Kerry in the 2011 All Ireland football final is something I will always remember. We had to write a radio report on the match for our Irish class in school and me and my friend and fellow club member Mary Walley kept arguing over who got to read the section about Kevin McManamon’s goal out to the class.
If Scoil was a country what would it be? Why?
Very obvious but I’d say it would be Ireland! Full of culture, affected by the weather, friendly, welcoming, a great place for a pint and always a bit of craic!
What would you say you are most known for within Scoil?
I’m probably most know as being one of the Egan’s, my Mam, Dad, uncles, aunts and cousins are all involved in the club and have been for many years. This year I’m playing with two of my sisters Gráinne and Orlaith and two of my cousins Kate and Mary on the ladies team. You can’t get away from us!
What has been your greatest Scoil moment / achievement?
My greatest achievement was saving one single goal last year when I had a short stint in goals. Can’t even count how many I let into the back of the net. Happy that we have capable goalkeepers standing in front of the goal this year!
What is your profession / field of study / passion?
I’ve just finished in DCU studying children’s and general nursing and I am working in Temple Street children’s hospital at the moment. The shift work and long hours have interefered with my ability to commit to training and matches every week but I’m very lucky that whenever I have the time off I’m made welcome back onto the pitch regardless.
What are your favourite hobbies outside of GAA?
I have a great grá for Irish music and play a bit on the button accordion.
If you could make one addition to Scoil in any way, what would it be?
I’d get a few big Astro turfs so we could train through the winter and also a nice swimming pool, sauna, and steam room for post match or post training relaxation.

TEAM REPORTS
LADIES DIVISION 7
v Trinity Gaels 22/5/2018
Trinity Gaels 9-11 Scoil B 4-13
The final scoreline gives a false impression of how close the game was with the outcome in doubt until the final 5 minutes. The game had been even throughout as the teams matched scores throughout the game, However, as tiredness set in during the closing stages, Scoil conceded 3 goals in the last 5 minutes.
The Scoil forward line combined well together and there were some excellent scores from Niamh Nestor and Caoimhe de Buitlear. Emily McMullen playing in a sweeper role also managed to get forward to score a number of points.
While the manner of the defeat was disappointing, it was still a very encouraging performance from the team.
The Ladies A team have not played for a number of weeks and do not have a scheduled game until 27th June. The Championship was scheduled to take place in May/June, but a hastily arranged revision of the Championship by the County Board, failed to provide games for the Junior B teams. The Scoil players continue to train, with just a short break for last Saturdays highly successful Summer Loving fundraiser.

UNDER 16 GIRLS
v St Vincents 24/5/2018
We had 21 keen girls turning out for this game against the league leaders who are obviously a full under 16 squad. As the game progressed we saw why Vincent’s had not been beaten this season. They were fast and accurate in their shooting and in their passing and soon went ahead on the score sheet. Despite the best efforts of our girls we could not keep up with them although our girls did try valiantly. When you consider that our team consists of girls ranging from 13 to under 16 many of whom have played feile as well as under fifteen games all season you can understand that tiredness also played a factor. That is not to say that we gave up easily. In fact we tried hard until the very end. The final score was Scoil 4.8 to Vincent’s 7.13
This was the last game of the season for us and Paul ended by saying how impressed he was with our girls both for their much improved play and for the way they played two games every weekend. Obviously our parents are the best in the club for their dedication to Scoil ferrying the girls to so many games. So its time for a well earned rest for girls, parents and mentors although we hope to see some of them on Friday night in the club for the annual mixed blitz for the under 13 to under 16. Have a wonderful and safe holiday everyone.

UNDER 10 GIRLS CAMOGIE
v St Maurs 26/5/2018
The Girls U10 Team made a return journey to Rush, this time for Camogie. With more players available than last week, the teams put on the great display.
The Green team had 2 good wins with all playing a part. Caragh was busy in the forward line and chipped in with some excellent scores. Caoimhe scored a point to much delight. Nessa and Niamh were strong in defence.
The Yellow team also put in a great performance and skills base is expanding rapidly. There was a specific focus put on balance when striking and this allowed us to move the ball faster than the opposition. There were some notable performances from Lauren and Aishat at midfield with the latter battling on bravely after a nasty bang to the hand. The heroine of the day however was Ciara who battled throughout and scored a last minute goal to settle the outcome of the second match.

UNDER 9 GIRLS CAMOGIE
v Good Counsel 27/5/2018
The Blue Team put on excellent displays against 2 Good Counsel teams. On a overcast morning, the players worked tirelessly for the 2 games. Aoibhinn and Ella were central to everything in the first match. After a good team talk before the second game the team made much better use of the ball and started to take some great scores. Thanks to everyone who played with the opposition to ensure that the matches were competitive and everyone got to play a full part. The team moved the ball well, making big blocks and took full advantage of the space often made by holding their positions. With hard work and determination, the team played some great camogie
The Red team played two very good matches. All players battled hard. Moment of the game was Aibhilin’s score, all the way from the Scoil full back line. Alice struck some nice shots from out of hand. Emily and Aifric were busy in mid field. Sarah also put in a battling display.
This is a big week for this team and the club with the start of Hurl with Me. Watch this space and social media for updates as we work toward the national blitz on the 1st of July in Abbotstown
Next weekend is a rest weekend with no matches scheduled. There is of course the Scoil Blitz which we hope to see all our players enjoying.

NURSERY
Scoil Uí Chonaill Under 7s (Scoil Academy) played their second series of games of the year against Whitehall Colmcille last Saturday. There was a great turn out of 22 players on a beautiful day in St Aidan’s School. The support provided by parents and family was much appreciated by all the players and coaches.
We divided in 3 teams and each team played 3 games against strong Whitehall teams. It was a very ‘competitive’ football outing with all players showed great determination and a range of skills. It was really pleasing for the coaches to see the kids staying the their positions and using the kick pass as well as hand passing throughout all the games. All the training both at the club and at home is really paying off. Keep up the good work as we will be playing more games before the summer break with return visits planned from Binn Eadair as well as Whitehall. Many thanks to Whitehall for the welcome and the treats which were much appreciated.
There is additional training for children born in 2011 on Monday nights in the club from 7pm to 8pm. The purpose of this is to continue to get these kids ready for matches they will by playing this year and ultimately for the under 8s league games next year.
Nursery continued as usual for everyone last Saturday morning at 9.30am. It was great to see parents joining in with training last Saturday and feel free to help out anytime. Congrats to our players of the week and as always new players are welcome to join in and have fun. There will be a change from the usual this Saturday, as the club blitz will be held from 2pm so there will be no training this Saturday morning. Hope to see everyone at the blitz and keep an eye on whatsapp for more information.
