U11’s in Croker

Scoil Boys Have a Great Night in Croker Debut

It was a dream come true for the Under 11 boys last Saturday night with them playing in the exhibition game at half time in the Dublin v Galway football league game. Playing under lights for the first time and in front of their biggest crowd ever – all of fourteen thousand people they had a great game and did Scoil proud. The game against Crumlin was a fast paced game as it only had the 12 mins at half time to play.

The team lined out as follows: goal – Cillian, backs – Isaac, Callum, Conor K and Joe, midfield – Conor M and Michael, forwards – Jake, Paddy, Senan and Ruairi. Evan was the non playing captain for the night. It was really great to have the rest of the team who weren’t playing Sean, Temi, Eoghan Og and Richie along on the night for support. A pleasant surprise on the night was that all the lads were allowed down into the dressing rooms and onto the pitch for the game so they all got to experience what its like in Croker and it made for a unforgettable team occasion.

The game itself was fast, fair and well refereed by Ben (from Scoil) who did a great and very fair job on the night even though his club were playing – so well dome Ben!

Quick kick outs from Cillian were the order of the day as the backs and midfielders made themselves available. The midfield and forwards put together some good passing play and keeping procession of the ball as we worked on in training. Cillian made a great save early on which was important so that we didnt concede early. Possession was probably fairly even between both teams. Whilst both teams missed a few chances Ruairi finished off a great move involving 4 or 5 scoil players with a point to score the winning point for Scoil – probably the clubs first win in Croker for a while!. Whilst the mentors on the pitch (Brendan and Colin) did the usual job of roaring at the kids to get back into position the kids laughingly pointed out afterwards that they couldn’t hear us! The good side of this was that they had to make all the decisions on the pitch themselves and were well able for it.

The parents of course played their part by having the kids all suited and booted in their Scoil gear for the evening and coming along with siblings for support on the night. It was great to see plenty of support from other club mentors and kids from Scoil so thank you all and also to Thomas and Ronan. Also thanks to the other team mentors Alan and Cormac who prepared the kids well during the previous weeks training sessions.

Scoil Stars

Juvenile mentors and devout Scoil members Jackie Geraghty and Sandra Curtin have orchestrated an amazing initiative called ‘Scoil Stars’. The programme is to help those with Specific Learning Difficulties and Special Educational Needs in the development of their GAA talent. This fantastic programme will be in place for most of the year and our senior players are asked to help out in any way they can as this development will be instrumental in developing younger players abilities.

Dates and times are yet to be confirmed, though it will be beginning in February of this year. Please contact Jackie: 0872672038 or Sandra: 0872227056 for any information regarding this.

Team News

Under 8’s: “Training continued on Mondays and Saturdays with a good mix of football and hurling. Week 3 of Gormanston indoor hurling continued on Sunday morning with the Scoil players once again showing great determination and spirit with no chances given to the opposing teams to score, meaning we extend our record to 6 matches without conceding a goal. It was a real team effort. Ryan defended well in goals, Orla and Jason made a great effort at blocking the oppositions balls, whilst Senan, Roisin, Simon all played great in their forward positions and were part of the scoring bonanza for Scoil.  Off to Swords on Saturday for a pre-season friendly against Fenians.”

Under 9’s: “The under 9 had their first friendly on Saturday against St. Monica’s. Both teams were triumphant on the day and it was a great start to the new season. On Saturday, our team played really well in both matches. Aodh and Jake were tireless in their running, covering the whole pitch. Jack played well wherever asked and scored at least two fine points. Hugh was great in defence often being the only man back while Fionn and Alex were good in support with some good passing.  Cian made some great saves in goal while Noah and Sean played really well up front. Ruairi made great use of space and passed well which produced lots of scoring opportunities.”
