Senior Hurlers: Scoil 3-4 Naomh Barrog 2-14 .

Senior hurlers got their campaign underway in Division 2 against Naomh Barrog on Sunday. On a foggy morning, with difficult pitch conditions, both teams struggled to find any sort of form. The early stages of the game were tense and closely fought, with the scoreline a mere 0-01 to 0-00 to Barrog after 10 minutes. The game opened up with a goal to Naomh Barrog and some soft frees, allowing the home side to gain a bit of a lead. Podge Morrissey got a goal for Scoil just before half time to leave the score at 1-5 to 1-1.

The second half continued in much the same form, both sides making mistakes and lacking any fluidity. Barrog opened up a lead with another goal early into the second half and led from there on. Scoil responded with some nice play in the forwards, Joe Ryan and Robbie Kennedy linking up for two nice scores. The latter won Scoil a penalty, which Barry Cushen converted. Another late goal for Scoil was in vain, as we rallied after going down to 14 men. Performances from Daragh Levins and Cathal Hardy were extremely impressive, and there is a lot to build on for the hurlers. Onwards and upwards!

U15’s: Scoil  2-13 Vins  2-06

The lads recorded a superb victory against Vinnies away on Sunday.

Scoil were always on top and great movement and inter-play resulted in numerous chances created in the first half but a combination of good defending, poor luck and the lack of a better final ball unjustly resulted in level scores at HT. Our defence and midfield were on top the entire half and our forward line was always dangerous.

The boys were told to keep playing as there were and we would pull away.

Cathal O Connell, who was excellent throughout, scored a fantastic goal from half back and that allowed Scoil to pull away.

Brendan O Connell scored 7 points and was a threat consistently, it would be unfair to single out individual performances but Sean O Flaherty, Caleb McDermott and Rian Farrell were also dominant throughout .

Truthfully all the lads played solidly and superbly with a special word for Rory O Donnell in goal who was safety personified.

Onwards and upwards!

U12’s: U12 Hurlers had very impressive 15-12 v 1-0 home win v Naomh Mearnog.Great to see the scoring duties spread throughout the team today with two of our lads (Diarmuid & Conor) grabbing hat tricks also.

Word of caution though – Much tougher challenges will lie ahead & our kids need to ensure they don’t lose the run of themselves with such lofty scorelines to date, as well improving their overall team work/interplay levels also. However, we’ll take the win regardless, given it was our 1st Grading game.

Finally, congrats to Alex Courtney who was voted U12 Hurling Team Captain & Adam Ryan Vice Captain for our U12 Hurling Grading games – Best of luck lads.

Roll on the next game – Up Scoil.

Regards Jp / Liam / Ronan

U10’s: Gold for u10s at end of Finian’s Rainbow.

The u10 hurlers faced a very strong St Finian’s side on Saturday in the Alfie Byrne all weather pitch.  Despite a number of players being away for half term, both of our teams played brilliant hurling and were more than a match for their talented opponents.

Our early season games have brought us on considerably and, as skills are improving, the boys are really enjoying their hurling.

Team John

We started a bit slowly which was unsurprising as this was the first time this team had played together (as a number of players from other teams joined us to make up our numbers).

In the first half, we allowed Finian’s to pick up the ball without putting in challenges. We would have been in big trouble in the first half without Sam’s fantastic performance at centre back. He kept making super tackles and driving the ball long into the forwards. Eoin had a good outing in goal and his super long puc outs reduced the pressure on our backs and put us on the attack.

At half time, we decided that we would not allow our opponents to pick up the ball so easily.  We delivered a cracking performance in the second half with some super tackling and striking. Brodie was brilliant at midfield throughout the match. He kept putting pressure on his opponents and was pulling so hard that he broke a hurl! (We are always happy to see a broken hurl as it shows that a player is getting stuck in and pulling hard).

In the forwards, Danny had a superb game and kept pressure on the defense (as Brian Cody says, a forwards first job is to prevent the backs from clearing the ball).

A huge thanks to the 4 girls who helped us out  – Caoimhe, Aibhilin, Taiya and Abbie. They really are an exceptionally talented bunch. Also thanks to Fionn for sharing his experience and know-how.

Team Cormac

Team Cormac put in a dominant performance in both halves, getting to the sliotar first and winning 50/50 challenges.

Conall and Darragh kept us on the front foot covering plenty of ground, while James and Denis tackled strongly. Denis’ hurling skills are really coming along and he made a big team contribution with clean strikes, a couple of good lifts and one particularly nice handpass to create a scoring chance.

On the other side of the ledger, with our territorial dominance, some backs thought it was a license to abandon their positions leading to concession of some soft scores on the counter attack. We talked about this at half time and Paddy put in a disciplined performance at full back in the second half, making sure we always had a player between our goalkeeper and the opposition attack. This helped us keep Finian’s scoreless in the second half.

U8’s: Under 8s played their second league match on Saturday, three teams played hurling against Navan road Oliver Plunkett in Scoil Ui Chonaill.  Much to the delight of the coaches and parents, the boys and girls played great and are beginning to understand the tackling rules and how to handle the moving ball. By playing together the three teams were well able to hold their own. The three captains for the day were Roisin, Sarah and Sophia. This fighting spirit was also carried through to Sunday morning for the last week in Gormanston College where the local rivals Raheny proved to be a challenge but Scoil did come out on top. The neighbouring county rivals of Ratoath were also a force to be reckoned with, but a defensive game played by Scoil paid off. Conall, Simon, Malick, Shane, Eoghan all played their part in mid position and Gene and Sarah ensured there were scores on the board for Scoil. Rory and Jason were absent due to sickness and were missed but will be back next week. Get well soon Rory and Jason.

Nursery: It was a beautiful morning and had a great turnout. The blues worked hard on their football and hurling match skills. The green and yellows worked hard on their football and hurling skills. The coaches were really impressed with the effort the kids made.
Players of the week on the 16th were Aoibhinn, Eimear and Leon.

Players of the week last week were Matthew and Emmy.

U7’s: We had a great turnout for our fifth and final week at Gormanston. The teams played Raheny and Ratoath both weeks. Both teams played brilliant and kept their positions and made some super passes and strikes leading to great goals.
Afterwards, the kids were presented with medals, certificates and a little goodie bag.
Well done to all the kids and more importantly the parents for getting them out so early over the last 6 weeks.
