Team News

Our adult footballers and hurlers had a weekend without matches to focus on training.

U12’s: What a miserable wet and windy day for a game but luckily we had use of Alfie Byrne astro pitch to save the cars from a muck fest!!

This was top of table clash, unfortunately first half was probably the worst Scoil U12’s played this season.

Old habits returned with gusto with majority of team thinking they were forwards and leaving their defensive duties in the car park!! This error was further compounded with us playing into strong wind and using “Hail Mary” passes which gave away possession cheaply which led to scores against us.

Thank God, attitude changed 2nd half and we started stringing meaningful passes together which led to a number of scores on the board. Defensive mindset kicked in first 15 mins and we took control.

Sensing the game was getting away from them, St Marys stepped it up and tackles started flying in (Liam & Adam receiving extra attention) and they started to move ball much quicker and slicker than us.

Scoil thankfully didn’t take the bait with the high challenge count and held firm. However the game definitely swung again the last 5 mins with couple of sloppy scores against us.
Only for some strong saves from Luke M, this game could have gone other way.

Apologies to those subs who didn’t get on today but there will be plenty of game time over the season to be had.

Well done to all the Lads for showing fighting spirit and grinding out positive result in what was a War of Attrition at times.

Finally – I did tell you Tadhg (New) would score today & he did!

Regards Jp / Liam / Ronan

U11’s: The boys played a football game on Saturday in Alfie Byrne Road against Tyrellstown. Despite being very competitive they lost narrowly by 6-5 to 4-5. It was very much a case of a game of two halfs. Captained by Richie, Scoil were dominant in the first half scoring 3-4 with 2 goals from Callum, 3 points from Joe and 1-1 from Ruairi. We were first to the ball from Cillians kick outs, winning the 50:50 balls and using the ball intelligently which resulted in good scoring opportunities for the forwards. Unfortunately the second half we couldn’t master playing with a strong cross field wind and lost our shape a bit giving Tyrellstown a good 5 minute scoring period with 3-1 which did most of the damage. We rallied a bit with a goal from Jake and a point from Michael but Tyrellstown scored 2 goals in the last 3 minutes as our lads tired. Every week it is great to see we are getting more and more competitive and creating scoring opportunities. We need to work more on tactics and have more confidence by retaining hard won procession and not kicking it away to the opposition. The longer games and our lack of substitutes also mean the lads have to keep going and concentrating for longer which is also a learning curve. Michael was man of the match and captain for this week.

U10’s: In all our matches this year, we had shown glimpses of how good we can be. On Saturday against Tyrellstown, we finally delivered a complete performance.

Every one of our players can be proud of their performance. The difference in this match was that all players did their best and did not give up until the final whistle.

As we were playing with a strong wind in the first half, Sam played as a ‘third midfielder’ in the zone between midfield and the forward line.  In the opening minutes, he set the tone with two fine points from the first two passes that he received. Next came a smartly taken goal by Brodie which followed some clever hand passing between Sam, Matthew and Brodie. Brodie followed this up with a point from long distance after a quick pass from a line ball by Sam.

One of the best moves of the day began with a strong tackle on a defender by Eoin, which was immediately followed by a block down by Matthew. The ball fell to Shay who was alert to score a great goal. This goal showed everything that was good about our performance – hard work and not giving up.

Shay was on fire throughout the match and scored five goals which must be a record for this team.  Breaking at speed from midfield, Matthew scored a super long range goal. Cian was working hard up front, competing for every ball and putting the defence under pressure.

At half time, we agreed that hard work would be required in the second half as we would be facing a strong wind. The players did not disappoint.

Despite coming under more pressure, our defence held firm with Sam moving into a sweeper role to offer extra protection. Both Jamie and James tackled hard and repeatedly burst past their opponents to set up attacks. Darragh gave an exhibition of high catching and looked up to find his midfielders with accurate kick passes.

Brodie had a super second half, covering a lot of ground and never giving up. He also scored four long-range points including an incredible effort from the half way line.

Danny started in goal and kept a clean sheet. He then moved into the forward line and worked hard tackling and ‘shadowing’ his opponents.

All in all, this was an excellent performance. There will be many more good days, if we keep following the team mantra of “work hard and never give up”.

U8’s: Binn Eadair came to Scoil grounds on a biting windy Saturday morning where the rain stayed away but the wind made for a difficult enough encounter with high balls not always finding the goal posts and the need for layering up all the more important. The three teams played two matches in close encounters and were able to stay in touch with Binn Eadair by some tight tackling and good mid field play. More accurate point scoring will be a focus of training going forward. Tyler being one example of a player who is well able to tackle and score when needed. Bill scored his first point as an under 8. Orla Kelly played well too. Simon played in a few different positions and showed great flexibility, Other players will have to get used to being swapped around and trying out different positons to develop their skills further. Thanks to Niamh for opening the clubhouse and to  Alan for the biscuits. The drinks and biscuits were a lovely treat for the players and coaches alike.  Hurling Training on Bank Holiday Monday will hopefully stand to us next Saturday as we play Na Fianná at home.
