Meet Aodhán Ó Ríordáin
How long have you been involved in Scoil Uí Chonaill?
On and off since about 2001.
Do you have any nicknames? How do you like to be addressed?
Aodhán is fine. (As in ‘Crayon’ or ‘Spray-on’)
Where do you hail from?
From Malahide originally. Now live in Drumcondra.
How did you come to be involved in Scoil?
I used to bring girls from my school St Laurence O’Toole’s GNS, Seville Place to Saturday morning coaching in the early 2000s. Very good friend of mine Shane Ó Foghlú has always been involved.
Briefly describe your Scoil career as a player / mentor / contributor, if any.
Played for a short and inglorious stint with the Junior footballers in my late 20s. In the last number of years have been involved in mentoring adult ladies football sides, and also took part in Strictly Scoil.
What would you say you are most known for within Scoil? i.e. what do people associate you with?
Probably carrying a water bottle on the sideline of the Ladies football games! And then tweeting about it!
What has been your greatest Scoil moment / achievement?
Thoroughly enjoyed the comradery and buzz of Strictly Scoil, The work that everyone put into the event was incredible and the atmosphere on the night itself was fantastic. Also remember a great Championship win against Wild Geese a few years back that was pretty sweet when managing the second Ladies side.
What is your profession / field of study / passion?
Originally a primary school teacher and principal. Have been full time politician since 2011. Resigned my teaching post last year.
What are your favourite hobbies outside of GAA?
Big soccer fan. Enjoy theatre, history and Netflix! Also collect match programmes – mainly GAA and soccer.
If you could make one addition to Scoil in any way (don’t be restricted by the plausible!), what would it be?
Hard to pick one to be honest. We are a very welcoming club that isn’t widely replicated. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, you’re always welcome to get involved in Scoil Uí Chonaill.
What is your favourite Scoil ‘quirk’?
The Scoil colours are unique. My dad (ex-pupil) says it was based on a rugby jersey that O’Connell’s once had back in the day but I’m sure that’s up for debate!
If you close your eyes and envisage Scoil in 10 years, what do you see?
Hundreds of children, from all backgrounds, enjoying our games and making friends. Also strengthening the links with the North Inner City schools which is a unique feature of this great club. Also really excited with what people like Jonny, Gus, Peter, Gerry & others are building in the Ladies section – in ten years time we can be the club every other club wants to be.
Finally, if you had to describe yourself as an animal, what would it be and why?
Panda. Sure why not?
Team News
Teams get back to training this week, with some arranging challenge games in preparation for important upcoming matches.
Under 14/15 girls challenge v Whitehall Gaels
This game was intended to reintroduce the girls to matches now that lots of them are home fromholidays. It was certainly a game of two halves and in the first half it looked as though we might as well have stayed at home as Whitehall slammed in score after score. We don’t know what Paul said at half time but it certainly worked. The girls came to life in a thrilling second half attacking and defending with gusto. Lia was under constant pressure but stayed her usual calm self making some excellent saves. Kellyann played the game of her life tackling with great determination and Eve was also superb in defence. Caoimhe Mulligan made some excellent interventions while Siofra made some unbelievable blocks. Abbie D ran herself ragged marking her opposite number. Holly, as usual, was always where she was needed and added to our scoring tally and Abby R was showing just how much she learnt at all the training she attended during the summer. The same, of course, went for Caoimhe K as she slammed in goal after goal in her own inimitable fashion. Meibhín marked her opponent zealously and Siobhan fought for every ball both marking excellent Whitehall players. Reailín scored a lovely point. Sorcha Mulligan was very willing but unfortunately hurt herself early during the game. We hope she has recovered. We thank Therese and herself for togging out with the older girls. The girls played a wonderful second half against a very strong and skilful Whitehall team. There is no doubt that they will learn and benefit from playing against such strong teams. In the first half Whitehall must have thought they were cruising to victory but Scoil certainly worried them in a pulsating second half. Well done girls you made us proud. It was nail-biting stuff!
