Meet Daire Ryan
How long have you been involved in Scoil Uí Chonaill?
My whole life more or less, from nursery the whole up to an active adult member now.
Do you have any nicknames? How do you like to be addressed?
Ryanner to a lot of the lads, Gaz to a particular group of friends (I’ve no idea why) or Daire works fine by me.
Where do you hail from?
I’m a local lad, grew up and still live just off Vernon Avenue in Clontarf. Both my parents are from Tipperary though, where my hurling’s skills were honed in the home of hurling.
How did you come to be involved in Scoil?
I actually don’t know the answer to that. To get to scoil from my house you have to drive right past the Clontarf gaa clubhouse but I’m glad my Dad stayed going towards the seafront for whatever reason. I get a shiver down my spine every time I go past that Clontarf clubhouse.
Briefly describe your Scoil career as a player / mentor / contributor, if any.
I’ve been an active-ish footballer and hurler from juvenile right up until this year where I decided to just concentrate on hurling. In recent years, I can be seen more regularly nursing hamstrings on the sideline or waving white or green flags from behind the goals during matches. As Gary Rolls reminds me regularly.
What would you say you are most known for within Scoil? i.e. what do people associate you with?
Since my jeep got branded with some of the products that I sell it has gotten a fair bit of attention so I’ll go with that, the fella who drives the black jeep covered in chicken!
What has been your greatest Scoil moment / achievement?
Beating Clontarf in the AHL4 playoff final was a particularly sweet moment as I’d know a fair few of the lads on that team but more importantly that we’d been working very hard as a team for the previous few years to build up some momentum and move up the leagues. Some say the sliotar from the point I scored that day is still travelling. Hopefully more success on the way this year for the hurlers with winning AHL3 and the intermediate championship well within our grasp.
What is your profession / field of study / passion?
Graduated from DCU last November with a degree in international business and have been working as a sales executive with Pan Euro Foods for the past year.
What are your favourite hobbies outside of GAA?
I’m a massive sports fan in general in particular GAA and rugby. Love going to Croke Park during the summer to watch matches. Outside of sports I enjoy travelling, haven’t been able to do much recently but hopefully in the next year or two I’ll be able to get a couple big trips in.
If you could make one addition to Scoil in any way (don’t be restricted by the plausible!), what would it be?
It would be great if we could extend the clubhouse bar to cover the whole of the 1st floor meaning we could comfortably have bigger functions and crowds in the bar and not have it split the way it is currently. A balcony on the pitch facing side of the clubhouse would be a good addition as well for people to watch training or matches while having a cup of tea or a pint. And finally a small one, a fully licenced television with a host of channels so sport can be watched after matches on the weekend.
What is your favourite Scoil ‘quirk’?
I’ve always thought the dinner dance is a particularly special event in Scoils calendar that I’m not sure many other clubs around the country have one. Martin Tierney summed it up perfectly to me the week after his 1st dinner dance “Ryanner I woke up the morning after the dinner dance and the 1st thing that came into my mind was can we do that again tonight”.
If you close your eyes and envisage Scoil in 10 years, what do you see?
A club that has continued on its upward curve of the last couple of years and is competing at the highest levels in football, hurling and camogie. Great to see camogie making a comeback in scoil recently.
Finally, if you had to describe yourself as an animal, what would it be and why?
A giraffe for obvious reasons
