Meet Jonny Rock
How long have you been involved in Scoil Uí Chonaill?
About 8 years now, feels like more!
Do you have any nicknames? How do you like to be addressed?
Jonny is about as creative as it gets!
Where do you hail from?
Artane – Dublin
How did you come to be involved in Scoil?
I played soccer growing up, but always loved GAA. A good friend of mine and current hurler Podge Kelly brought me down to the Scoil blitz one year and was safe to say I was hooked from there.
Briefly describe your Scoil career as a player / mentor / contributor, if any.
I was always quite injury prone while playing, probably watched more matches from the sidelines than actually played. About 3 years ago I had to stop playing entirely because of this. My dad, Gus, looked after the ladies team at the time and would always drag me along to carry the water bottles, which eventually progressed to doing a few drills in training to now managing the team. Also lucky enough to be helping the senior lads out with stats for their games. Glad I got involved as I haven’t missed playing since!
What would you say you are most known for within Scoil? i.e. what do people associate you with?
Mainly for looking after the ladies team. But also being hounded by the subs at the men’s matches to know how long is left in a game.
What has been your greatest Scoil moment / achievement?
Seeing our minor girls claim the Championship last year – the first I’ve seen since coming along, but no doubt the first of many.
What is your profession / field of study / passion?
Recently graduated as a Leisure Manager.
What are your favourite hobbies outside of GAA?
I’m a fan of most sports, would try and watch/get to as many games as possible!
If you could make one addition to Scoil in any way (don’t be restricted by the plausible!), what would it be?
Definitely floodlights for the pitch, maybe even extending the grounds to have 2 or 3 more pitches, can never have enough space!
What is your favourite Scoil ‘quirk’?
Probably if you’re training down behind the far goal, having to dodge the odd stray tennis ball that can come flying over the wall.
If you close your eyes and envisage Scoil in 10 years, what do you see?
I hope to see the ladies team, much like the men, competing at senior level in the county and raising the profile of the club, not only in our area but all over Dublin. I would also expect to see us having a very strong underage system, seeing some of the very committed players and coaches we have out every week showing the passion and enjoyment Scoil Uí Chonaill can bring. I have no doubt, because of this, within 10 years we’ll have a number of teams at every age group, providing every aspect of Gaelic Games, from winning trophies to having fun playing alongside friends.

AHL3 Hurling
Scoil 19 to 1-15 Thomas Davis
In the first League outing of the year, our Hurlers put in a strong performance which saw them lead from start to finish. With a stiff breeze in the first half, Scoil took advantage and drove into Thomas Davis from the whistle. Despite a healthy score line at the halfway break, it was the number of blocks, hooks and tackles which allowed Scoil a deserved rest.
But this Thomas Davis are a strong side (ran out comfortable winners in the same fixture last year) and were not to be underestimated. As they clawed back into the game, helped by a goal from a free on the 21-yard line, Scoil’s resolve was called upon. Showing fierce grit and determination, Scoil fought until the end and picked up some scores when needed. Man of the Match was never up for debate, with Ruari ‘Fudge’ Coady putting in a Trojan display, leading both number of blocks and scores from play (with Neil O’Flynn also scoring four from play in a captain’s performance).
Other scorers include Barry Cushen 7 (4 frees), Alan Cronin 1, Andy Bunyan 1, Paraic Naughton 1, & Joe Ryan 1.

St Finians 3-11 to 3-09 Scoil
Sterling performance by the Juniors, leading by a 1 point into the closing minutes before shipping a late goal to hand Finians the result. Man of the match performance by Davy Condon, who carried the Scoil Uí Connail fight against a stiff breeze in the second half despite shipping a heavy knock in the first half.

Ladies Football
St Maurs 3-16 to 6-8 Scoil
The Ladies minor team had a tough loss against St.Maurs, losing out by a point 3-16 to 6-8, terrific game of football, with an exceptional shooting display from Emma Condon bagging 1-10 herself. But on a better note Marino Institute have won the Donaghy Cup, great to have a Scoil girl Aoife De Burca playing for them as well as new recruit Lucy Murphy, massive achievement for them, it’s an All-Ireland medal!

Minor Boys Football
Isles of the Sea 3-14 to 2-4 Templeogue Synge Street
The first Minor match of the season for Scoil (Isles of the Sea) took place last Sunday in Dolphin Park against Templeogue Synge Street. An excellent performance against a strong Templeogue side with some talented individuals.
Our team play and good score taking in the first half with the wind, gave us an 8 point lead at half time.
Conor Farrelly did an excellent job at full back marking a dangerous full forward.
In the second half, into a strong breeze, we played a possession game. David Kennedy (0-1) won multiple frees converted by Robert Kennedy (1-10). Eoghan Mc Kay was solid in the middle of the field and good play by Conor Ennis and Tomás O’Connell. Full forward Conor Rimmer scored 2 excellent goals and other scorers on the day were Des Duggan (0-2) and Rohan van der Akker (0-1).
Minor hurlers play Ballinteer St. Johns in Marlay Park at 11am on Sunday 19th March.

U12 Boys Hurling
Scoil Thunders had a tough day at the office against a superior Naomh Mearnog in Portmanock. Scoil started brightly with a long range free from Jack opening the scoring, followed shortly by a well taken free from Brendan.
Mearnog took control from then on and responded with a couple of goals following good work from their midfield pairing. Social were further hampered by a hand injury to Oisin, who gamely finished out the remainder of the match.
Eanna was the busier of the goalkeepers and was ably assisted by some stout defending from Oisin, Sean, Cillian and Fintan.
Brendan, Jack and Patrick kept the fires going in the Scoil engine room and launched some good long balls into the Scoil forward line of Fionn, Rory, Finn and Flann.
However Mearnog had a couple of tasty hurlers that punished any Scoil mistakes and they eventually ran out the worthy winners with a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-2.

U10 Hurling
Amazing skills & scores on show. Slippy & muddy conditions didn’t stop them!
Team JP Courtney racked up the points, as they completely outplayed our visitors with little Conal leading the way again. Great Defending by Calvin, Addi & Finn kept opposition to one score also. Given opposition numbers, we had to make a lot of subs during the game with each player doing their bit – Fantastic interlink play between the Niall, Conal & Charlie just failed to hit the net – Great display!!
Team Liam Ryan carried on from last time out with a crushing display without moving out of second gear. Scores coming from all quarters today. Adam started in goal which put pressure on others to get on scoresheet & they didn’t let Liam down with Alan, Luke, Jack, Fionn & Diarmuid all scoring!! Delighted to see Alex Courtney (aka the Wrecking Ball) make his long awaited return from injury.
Well done Boys!

U8 Hurling
Everybody ‘mucks’ in to deliver big performances for Scoil
Saturday’s u8 hurling games Vs Naomh Barróg showed commitment and dedication from all our players in very trying underfoot conditions. Everyone got ‘stuck’ in (last pun I promise) from the start with lots of good tackling, blocking and some great ball striking as we had done in training.
For the Maroon team, Coady proved a revelation in goal with a string of fine saves and earning a well deserved commendation from Naomh Barrog’s coach for his skills and keeping the Maroon’s in the second game. For the Blue team, there was lots of good tackling and clashing with players getting in close for blocking. Emily put in an exceptional performance, covering lots of ground and never giving up, while there were great long clearances from Eoin in the backs. For the Ambers, Jake showed great stick-work on both sides to get the ball out of tight situations. This ability to find space resulted in him being rewarded with a hat full of scores. Meanwhile, Joya played with great bravery and commitment, closing down Barróg players time after time. Her tackling and pressing set a great example for everyone on the team.
Next stop is Brigid’s away in football on Saturday. Meeting @ 9.30 a.m.”
