Meet Gerry Rowley
How long have you been involved in Scoil Uí Chonaill?
58 Years-a long time
Do you have any nicknames? How do you like to be addressed?
Not that I know of, Most people call me Ger.
Where do you hail from?
Phibsboro originally but now living in Clonsilla. Proud of my Leitrim heritage!
How did you come to be involved in Scoil?
I was a pupil in OCS and Bro. O Connor (Smilie)was a big influence. My Brother Joe who was also active in the Club was influential in my joining the Club.
Briefly describe your Scoil career as a player / mentor / contributor.
As a player I would be regarded as an average junior. Played from U13 up to junior. Highlight: Scored 2 points in Ruislip.
Minor Championship medal 1963. I moved to running teams at an early age and ran the under 15 team for quite a number of years. Juvenile Section set up in 1971 and I was first juvenile chairman and remained in that position till 1979. U21 manager for 4 years (a great bunch of lads and its gratifying to see 12 of the group still active in the Club.) From there I moved to be trainer of senior team (5 years). I was also Chairman of the Club from 1987/89 and secretary of the club for 3 years! Over the years I have served on a number of Committees mainly fundraising, development and brochure production.
I also trained and managed, for a number of years, the Dublin north U15 team for the now defunct “London Trip”. Conor Coady and Gerald O’ Connell of the present senior squad made their international debuts on this trip.
What would you say you are most known for within Scoil? i.e. what do people associate you with?
I don’t really know but hopefully my commitment to getting the job completed with best possible results!
What has been your greatest Scoil moment / achievement?
Without doubt training the senior championship winning team from 1983 to 1987-Scoil won two senior championships, a great era. I was also Chairman of the club in 1988 when the Clubhouse was constructed and opened, a great honour and a very lucky man to be in the right spot at the right time. Interviewing (Up for the Match in Clubhouse) Charlie Nelligan (A Kerryman with 7 senior football medals) was also a great experience.
What is your profession / field of study / passion?
Retired civil servant and enjoyed a very interesting and enjoyable career in D/ Finance (31 Years) and D/ Justice (9 years). I always found that being active and taking responsibility in club activity was helpful in career development. Still do!
My passion is commitment to the task on hand, everything else follows!
What are your favourite hobbies outside of GAA?
Mad about music (60’s pops, traditional Irish, live music shows and film musicals.) Since retiring in 2007 I have caught the travelling bug. I also like reunions!
If you could make one addition to Scoil in any way (don’t be restricted by the plausible!), what would it be?
Scoil, do not, by and large, hold on to its membership. Most move on when they retire from playing. If we could develop way of retaining a greater proportion of playing members after retirement– that would be very beneficial to the club
What is your favourite Scoil ‘quirk’?
We should instil discipline in the players to look after the club facilities (Newly refurbished Clubhouse and dressing rooms-two great jobs) and strive to keep them in pristine condition.
If you close your eyes and envisage Scoil in 10 years, what do you see?
With the energy, enthusiasm and commitment of the existing membership over the last few years, I see a beautifully developed ground with full winter facilities and I note from the notice board that “Scoil” are contesting at the highest level in all adult games, football, hurling, camogie and ladies football.

Painful Memories
Watch this very entertaining video in which the contributing parties in the infamous Paddy Cullen / Mikey Sheehy lob in the 1978 All Ireland Final reenact the event; including our own Robbie Kelleher’s doomed handing over of the ball!

Under 12 Boys – Thunder
Under 12 Football – Thunders vs Westmanstown – (1 – 5 to 1 – 7)
Scoil Under 12’s continued on their travels, facing Westmanstown in Clonsilla. It took nearly twenty minutes before the Scoil players seemed to switch on and cope with the heavy pitch. By that time Westmanstown had scored 1-4 and were in danger of dominating the rest of the match. Spurred on by the Scoil management, the players digged deep, particularly Sean who had a number of surging runs into the opposition’s defence. Oisin was starting to get on top of his man and accompanied by Fintan and Eoghan sent long balls into the Scoil had forward line. The Scoil forwards started to fire and points from Sean and Rory brought the score to 0-2 to 1-4 at the end of the first half.
The second half started with a dominant Scoil team racking up a few early scores from Brendan and a brace from Jack. However, Westmanstown responded and pointed a number of dubiously awarded frees.
Flan and Patrick in the Scoil forwards continued to hold onto possession, feeding the approaching half forwards of Cathal, Stephen and Jack.
With ten minutes to go Rory got on to the end of a long free from Brendan and pushed the ball into the net. A resurgent Scoil continued to press but Westmanstown’s defence were defiant and the score ended 1-5 to 1-7 in Westmanstown’s favour.
The Scoil team showed a tremendous amount of resilience and displayed ample spirit and enthusiasm. Well done to all.
Under 11 Boys
Scoil 13-15 – 5-7 Peregrines
SUPER performance by our U11s winning 13-15 to 5-7 vs Peregrines! 2 big wins in a row in our 1st 2 games of the season!
Great team work with some great new additions with every single one of our kids giving 110%!!
Some excellent Cluxton-Esque saves & distribution by Rory in goal with great passing from the defensive line, to midfield, to forward it’d be unfair to single out any individuals as they all gave it their all…& then some!
Special thanks to all the drivers & voices on the sideline who made the trip out to Peregrines- all helped our performance! Up SCOIL!
