Meet the Members:
Meet Your Chairman Maurice ‘Mossy’ O’Connell

They call him Mo, they call him Mojo

They call him Mo, they call him Mojo

How long have you been involved in Scoil Uí Chonaill?
I joined the club in 1979.

Do you have any nicknames? How do you like to be addressed?
Mo, Mossy and Mojo

Where do you hail from?
I’m a born and bred Dub and spent most of my life in Chapelizod. These days I’m living on the north side of the city, just a stones throw from Scoil.

How did you come to be involved in Scoil?
A good friend of mine Kieran Brady lived in Chapelizod and went to school in O’Connells so he  managed to get all the O’Connells; Mick, Sean & myself playing.

Briefly describe your Scoil career.
I played under 21s, Intermediate and Senior. I was lucky enough to be a part of the exceptional Senior Championship winning team of the 80s. I’ve also served my time as club chairman twice and also as juvenile chairman. Not to mention running under 16, minor and adult teams! I was happy to help my wife Maura as she kick started ladies football in the Club all those years ago.

What would you say you are most known for within Scoil?
Would have to be Chairman!

What has been your greatest Scoil moment / achievement?
Winning the Senior Championship. That was a special time in our history.

What is your profession / field of study / passion?
I am currently a director in Robert Gavan & sons, having worked for the company since the age of 16.

What are your favourite hobbies outside of GAA?
Being closer to Scoil means I can get out walking along the seafront. I also really value the time I get to spend with family & friends. I know it’s GAA, but I have to say I love going to matches!

If you could make one addition to Scoil in any way, what would it be?
I would hope we will see an Irish playschool /montessori school in the grounds to allow us cater for local parents and become a more commercially viable club. It would also be nice to start recruiting the next nursery early!

What is your favourite Scoil ‘quirk’?
Having to put the beer mat in the alarm to stop it from ringing. Not many people will remember that but it was definitely a classic Scoil scenario. Funnily enough, we’ve just recently replaced all of our fire alarms and extinguishers as in today’s age, codes of safety don’t allow for beer mat mufflers!

If you close your eyes and envisage Scoil in 10 years, what do you see?
I definitely see us playing Division 1 in Hurling & Football. We’ve such a determined crop of players with some excellent players making their way up.

Finally, if you had to describe yourself as an animal, what would it be and why?
Bear because I’m rough around the edges!

Results & Fixtures

Senior Football Fixture:
Scoil vs Castleknock
11.02.2017 @3pm; Clontarf Rd / Alfie Byrne (re weather)

Intermediate Hurling Result:
Scoil were beaten by the Laois u21s in a rusty but effective warm-up game in Ballacolla, Co.Laois on 04.02.2017

u16 Boys Football Result:
In the first league match away to Erin Go Bragh in Lucan, after a win last weekend in a friendly with Trinity Gaels, Scoil were pipped by a fitter side. After a great first half with Scoil leading by 2 points at half time, our lads simply lost their legs with Erin overrunning our defense. We played some good football at times with some great long range points from Cian Macken and two goals from Josh O’Toole. Good performances from Richie Nugent, Sean Downes, Ross Burnett  & Kealen O’Donohoe. Unfortunately we failed to take our opportunities. Final score 2-8 to 6-12

The very best of luck to all players doing mock junior cert exams at the moment!
