Golden Times

Golden Times by: Richard Murphy

Golden Times by: Richard Murphy

Tales from yesteryear – an opportunity for our “Scoil community” to share stories, memories from the past. We are delighted to have contribution in this edition from the highly esteemed club member, Richard (Dick) Murphy.

During the nineteen fifties when the Scoil Ui Chonaill Club was in its infancy fundraising was a major issue. One of our main sources of revenue came from running dances. Because of the ban on “foreign dancing ” the Scoil Ui Chonaill, name couldn’t be used on tickets or posters so we ran the dances under the name of the Stags Head Social Club. St Peter’s Hall, Phibsboro, was the venue on one such occasion and we had a well known band booked. Advertising the big night was essential and this consisted of putting up handmade posters at strategic locations .One of our great hurlers at the time, Freddie Devitt (RIP) had a car which wasn’t common then . I still remember the evening driving through the narrow lanes around Dalymount Park and Larry McVeigh (still a staunch Scoil member) and myself hopping on to the roof of the car to stick up a couple of posters . The day of the dance itself in early December 1954, turned out to be one for the history books. The Tolka river broke its banks and Fairview and parts of Drumcondra were under several feet of water . Rowing boats were used to get around . Despite the floods and incessant rain our fundraising dance was a huge success and in fact we had to turn people away. Proceeds for the night were excellent and helped in a big way to buy much needed gear for the club.
