Message from the Executive

Message from Executive re Maurice (Mossy) O’Connell, Club Chairman RIP

Last week was a very difficult one for the O’Connell family and the Club yet it was also a very proud and respectful one for everyone involved in Scoil Uí Chonaill. We welcomed Mossy back to the Club for the final time on Tuesday afternoon with great emotion and sadness. It was wonderful to see and meet the many members, former members, friends and family who came to pay their respects. We heard great stories of the many games played, trips taken and events enjoyed over the past forty years during Mossy’s time in Scoil Uí Chonaill. Before leaving the Clubhouse, we gathered for prayers and an emotional rendition of ‘Dublin in the rare oul times’. Current players and members formed a guard of honour as the coffin was carried to the gates of the Club before the journey home.

There was a wonderful turnout, many in Club colours, at the funeral on Wednesday in Donnycarney as members lined the entrance to the Church and joined in the Mass. There was a special guard of honour from Club players from O’Connells’ Primary School as the coffin left the Church. The Club also hosted the gathering of family and friends after the burial with many stories and great songs during the afternoon and evening. We were also very proud to see Mossy remembered in Croke Park on Saturday evening before the Dublin v Monaghan game.

We would like to say thank you to everyone who helped out in any way last week in preparing the Clubhouse and the Club grounds including cleaning, organising parking / traffic management, providing equipment, making tea & coffee etc. We would also like to acknowledge the support from the Dublin County Board and other GAA Clubs on our loss. Finally we say a special thank you for all the support for the O’Connell family, especially Maire, Gerald & Karen, Ciaran, Eoghan, brothers Mick and Sean and all their families at this very difficult time.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

Safe to say we all scrub up very well!

Scoil Clean Up

The Executive would like to extend their gratitude to members of the Senior Football and Hurling teams who took part in a club clean up last weekend. The portocabins, the changing rooms and the grassy area behind the clubhouse were all cleaned out, with adult players playing a huge role in that. Thank you to TJ Farrelly, Peter Morley and Matt Cushen for overseeing the work.

U13’s – Scoil Uí Chonaill (6-12) v Brigids GAA (4-4)- Football Match Report

Great to get back into action & 1st Grading Gaa Football Match definitely served up a feast in Extremely difficult conditions for both teams.

Before throw in both Teams held minute’s silence for the late great Scoil Uí Chonaill CLG Chairman Mossy O’Connell.

This was definitely a game of two halves with Scoil playing into the wind. Despite same we came away 2-4 v 2-3 up 1st half.

The lads with wind in their back took off second half with some excellent scores off the back of super team work. Deliberately not naming checking any player as they all contributed today.

Post match in Scoil Club, we had the pleasure of Barry Cushen & Andy Bunyan who presented the Lads with their U12/2019 Football (Div 4) & Hurling (Div 6) League Winners Medals – It’s with great sadness to me & fellow mentors that Mossy wasn’t the one to present the medals today but I’m sure he was responsible for the winds which saved us more than once.

Baz & Buno gave great insight into the importance of giving your all for your team, Mentors, enjoying the friendships being built and cherishing every minute playing together.

Have to say Mossy would have enjoyed the battle today and desire shown by our lads, as they served up fitting tribute on & off the field.

Best of luck to St Brigids GAA Club U13’s & Mentors for the coming season.

UP SCOIL!

Regards Jp / Liam / Ronan

U8’s: Our U8s boys and girls have been training hard over the last couple of months and have played a number of challenge games as well as playing at the Gormanston Indoor Hurling week for the last 5 weeks. The kids have showed great determination and skill levels over the 5 weeks. There will be a medal and certificate awards night in Scoil on Friday evening followed by pizza and treats. A big thanks to all the parents for giving up their lie ins on Sunday mornings…

The U8s boys and girls continue to train together but will split for Go Games. In preparation for the first round of boys Go Games this Saturday the boys played a strong Raheny U8s team last Saturday in Scoil. There were some brilliant kicking skills on display and the boys did great. Keep up the good work.  The boys kick off against St Finians in Scoil this weekend. We expect all parents to show their support from the sidelines.

UP SCOIL
