Senior Hurlers Back on Course
Our senior hurlers had a fantastic win on Sunday morning against Finbarr’s to get their season back on track. On a lovely morning in Cabra, Scoil arrived full of confidence having put together three good performances in a row. From the outset of the game, Scoil got off to a blistering start with scores from Robbie Kennedy and Padraid Conlon before Eoghan McKay set up Joey Ryan for the game’s first goal. Cathal Hardiman caught the puck out and put over a rasping score from his own half, which was replicated by Alan Cronin a few minutes later. Danny Mottram pulled off a wonder save in the first half and Scoil went in 7 points up at the break after a monster score from Ruairi Coady.
To Finbarr’s credit, they rallied at the beginning of the second half and put away 4 quick scores. Scoil were relying heavily on Robbie Kennedy’s frees, who was flawless from dead balls. Andy Bunyan worked tirelessly and won countless frees, as did Jason Redmond. Wing backs Kevin Farrell and Adam Wilson provided much needed support for the full back line of Conor Coady, Alan Cronin and Killian Linnane. With Finbarr’s gaining confidence, Joey Ryan scored 1-2 in the space of two minutes to settle proceedings. Shane Sheridan scored a further goal to seal the deal. Final score Scoil Uí Chonaill 3-20; Finbarr’s 2-13.
Áine Fanning Visits Scoil
No it wasn’t the sound of the Vikings Coming to Clontarf, it was the determined, courageous Scoil Ui Chonaill parents who came to have fun at Scoil yesterday at ‘Hurl with Scoil’. What a line up yesterday for ‘Hurl with Scoil 2019’. A balmy evening by the shores of the Dublin Bay nestled away our jewel in the crown our pristine pitches at Scoil Ui Chonaill got ready as we hosted ‘Hurl with Scoil’. What a line up of warriors the great Áine Fanning Dublin Camogie, Former Dublin Senior Hurler, Former Offaly County player, Former Kilkenny Camogie Club player and novices like myself to mention a few. Áine started off extending her knowledge and skills to us lively bunch over 25 adults involved. We were put through the paces how to hook, block, roll and jab lift, run with sliothar on stick to mention a few. Then it was down to business with adults v’s adults with plenty of needle in the game. Some clashes of the ash could be heard on the Clontarf Pitches and the roar of the crowd mainly kids shouting the parents on. Whilst the parents pucked, striked and scored we were very fortunate to have Séan, Alan D, John and Sinead running coaching hurling simultaneously with our youngsters. Áine Fanning is so giving of her time and yes she is a legend and an inspiration to young and old.
Girls Represent the Dubs
Huge congratulations to Sorcha Mulligan, Abbie O’Brien and Caoilinn O’Sullivan Lowry who were chosen to represent Dublin in the U13 Leinster Blitz on Saturday. This is a huge milestone and the girls can be very proud of themselves. We know their coach Aidan Mulligan is!

U17/16/14 Blitz: Blitz organised by the Under 16/17 mentors was a tremendous success yesterday with over 100 girls out to play at our grounds at Clontarf. Aidan Miulligan’s under 14’s played in the blitz too. Paul Keane & Niamh Crowe hosted a fantastic day with the help of the other mentors. The atmosphere was brilliant a lovely vibe altogether. Audrey and Ezter led an army of volunteers and cooked up a storm with BBQ and refreshments for our guests. Our visiting teams were very impressed by the welcome they received at Scoil Ui Chonaill.
Under 11’s: The under 11 boys with the help of Andrea Aoibhinn Aishat and Niamh played a home football game on Saturday against Ballinteer. We had a very solid first half with our defense being very solid and dealing with most attacks very well. Cillian in goals with Ruairí Niamh Aiibhinn Luke and Andrea were dominant in defense when Ballinteer got forward. In midfield the height and strength of Aishat was crucial in winning a lot of possession with the support of Joe and Conor K. Up front Paddy kicked some great points ably supported by Richie and Eoghan Og and Isaac. Calum took one for the team by volunteering to play the first half with Ballinteer. We gave Conor K to them in the second half and he went at us and evened things up. With a few position changes and losing Conor K the second half was definitely more even with Ballinteer kicking some great scores which our forwards and midfielders matched when they had to. All in all a great game. Man of the match was a close call but really has to go to Aishat who took a few knocks took a shot break and came back as strong as ever.
We followed it up on Monday with an away football game against Raheny. Again we had a few of the girls as well as Noah Sean de Barca and Tadhg helping us out as we are a bit short with a few players out injured. Alan managed the team to a good victory. It was a good performance from the team this evening. Built nicely on Saturdays good work. Our positioning was excellent especially when you consider how little we’ve played on a pitch that size and 15 a side. A big thanks to all non-U11 boys and the girls who helped us out, all contributed a big part – tackling from the girls was inspirational. Everyone on the team played their part but Ruairi was awarded a well deserved Man of the Match from his team mates.
Thanks to all the other teams for giving us players. We are learning a lot when playing with the girls and other boys in terms of using the ball more intelligently and it’s also great to have boys and girls in the club playing together occasionally.
U10 Football: Scoil u10s welcomed Erins Isle to a busy Clontarf Road on Saturday morning, where questions were being asked as to why no team cashed in on a bake sale cash bonanza.
There was a great turnout from both players and parents, and this added to a lively atmosphere pitchside. There were similar patterns to both Scoil teams’ matches as both teams allowed themselves to be bossed physically in the first half but turned things around in the second. Some things never change!
Team Cormac (kids, don’t forget our team naming competition), playing against a strong wind, found themselves penned in for much of the half. We didn’t help ourselves by committing countless handling errors from kickouts and longer passes. Catching practice is on the menu for summer. Of more concern in that first half was our polite, after you, please-go-first, ‘wave my foot or hand in the general direction’ approach to tackling. We did get a couple of nice scores though and there was a standout where Conall got out in front of his marker to gather a great Brodie sideline and then turned his marker inside out to finish. The half time chat was predictable enough; the executive summary is that the kids were asked if they were happy to be physically bossed around. The response to that question in the second half was a resounding no. The lads came out like a train and never stopped chugging until the match ended. In a reverse of the first half Scoil pozunded the Erin’s Isle goal. Quicker to the ball and more physical in the tackle they were able to get hold of the ball and show their skills in possession. At times it looked like there were 2 Matthews he covered so much ground and 2 or 3 handpassed points from him set the tone. Shay scored a lovely jinking point finished with the outside of his boot, while Sam came bursting out of defense time and again. Special praise for Danny, whose kickouts in the second half were spot on and set a great platform for the team. Well done to the lads for the great spirit they all showed and well done too to the parents for their vocal support that made a big difference to the team.
For team John, whether it was the end of the school term hovering into view or something else, our usual focus, and structure were strangely absent in the first half. Strong tackling and hard work is something that this team has always taken pride in and have shown in spades over the past couple of months. However, on Saturday there were too many ‘weak arms’ which allowed our opponents to boss the first half. During this period, Cody kept us in the game and showed great determination to repeatedly get shoulder to shoulder with opponents and use the ‘near hand’ to dispossess them. He also had a number of long kicks to relieve pressure on the defense. After a half time discussion and re-set, we had a greatly improved performance in the second half. James Reilly stormed into the match and delivered another fine performance at midfield. Jamie Boyle showed great tenacity to win a free in a promising position. He kept working hard and was rewarded with a cracking goal a few minutes later. Playing in his first ever Gaelic football match, Adam delivered a wonderful performance and scored 5 superb points.
The messages that we will be trying to get across to the team this week are “always show up with the right attitude” and “never be out-worked”. As ever, we need parents to re-enforce these messages. Outside of that, over the summer, the kids really need to work on catching. It’s not something that will come from an hour a week in football training. Fundamentals like kicking and catching need to be practiced frequently at home. Easier said than done with other distractions, but they’ll see the improvements of they commit to it.
Under 8’s: Update from under 8s.
Home matches in football against Na Fianna on Saturday proved to be a close encounter for all three teams fielded.
For team Patrick, Malik and Conal were outstanding in midfield. Liam got some nice scores and defended well too. Roisin was in goals (at her request) and distributed really fast and accurately to our defence.
For team Brenda Shane scored an outstanding point. Gene and Sarah proved to be a dynamic duo in forward positions. Simon despite a few injuries persevered and was a key player for his team.
Eoghan played great for team Aidan as did Rio whose skills are going from strength to strength.
Last hurling match of the season this Saturday against Na Fianna again.
We are off to Croker on Sunday for the Leinster final which should be a fun day out.
