Blue Buno

Congratulations to our Senior Goalkeeper Andy Bunyan who started for Dublin on Saturday night in the Semi-Final of the O’Byrne Cup against Meath. Andy, or ‘Buno’ to those more familiar, played a starring role for Dublin, with crucial saves and superb kick outs in difficult conditions in Parnell Park.

A very tense affair, the game finished level, with both teams scoring a respectable 1-12. In somewhat rare circumstances, the game went straight to penalties, which is where Andy shined. He saved a crucial penalty for Dublin as they won 3-1 in the shootout. See pictures of the evening below!

Andy has been with the Dublin panel for just over a year at this stage, and it is fair to say that everyone in the club is immensely proud of him. The importance of having a representative of the club on the Dublin panel cannot be overstated, so keep it up Bunyan!

The final of the O’Byrne Cup will be played against Westmeath this Friday @ 7pm in Parnell Park – a huge Scoil support would be great to see!

Dubs Stars

A huge congratulations to Scoil Uí Chonaill members Hannah Leahy, Aideen Naughton and Sinéad de Burca on an amazing achievement last weekend, as they each represented the club at the Dubs Stars event.

Hannah made the amazing achievement of starting for the Dublin Senior Ladies football team, a feat which has never been achieved by a Scoil Uí Chonaill player before, so a huge congratulations to Hannah from all at the club.

Hannah Leahy has played a starring role for the club over the past number of years, and her hard work and dedication was typified by her being given the No. 12 jersey on Sunday morning. She played the full game for Dublin (hopefully the first of many) and was part of the winning side. Well done Hannah!

Aideen Naughton and Sinéád de Burca both lined out for the Navy Team in the New Ireland Assurance Junior Dubs Stars game on Sunday morning in DCU. Both Aideen and Sinéad have a great history with Scoil Uí Chonaill, so seeing them lining up for the Dubs Stars side on Sunday was a very proud moment for both player and club alike.

Aideen and Sinéad each scored a goal in a high scoring affair, as the game finished Blue Team 6-8 to Navy Team 3-4. Indeed the match report on the DLGFA website states that “Scoil Ui Chonaills Sinead de Burca was set up by O`Sullivan for a magnificent goal 2 minutes from time”.

The goal was greeted by the biggest cheer of the game from the large attendance. Sinead is too modest to admit that she has scored plenty of similar goals for Scoil. All the players received commemorative medals and retained the specially designed jerseys. The article to the game report can be found here.

Team News

As the season approaches, most teams are back training. It is a testament to the character and commitment of both coaches and players alike that we are only into the second week of January and teams are well and truly underway. As the club grows, it is becoming apparent that goals for teams are being set from the outset of the season. As a player, I understand the importance of this, and I encourage one and all to set personal targets for the upcoming season. As the season materialises, these goals can be adjusted, but I believe it is vital that each mentor, coach, player and supporter has some form of a goal for the season ahead.

The work that goes on behind the scenes is sometimes overlooked, so I would like to thank everyone for their continued commitment to improving this great club week in, week out.

Senior Footballers and Hurlers have been working very hard to get themselves in good shape for the upcoming season. Players are undertaking a rigorous training schedule which will allow them to compete at the high level that is expected in the Senior Dublin Leagues. Both sides lined out at the weekend for their first pre-season games. The hurlers were narrowly beaten by Peregrines in a closely fought contest on Friday evening. The footballers were successful in their trip to Balbriggan on Sunday afternoon, facing Duleek Bellewstown GFC. On a cold and windy evening, the players battled to win by a margin of 6 points.

Our acquirement of Alfie Byrne Road on Saturday mornings is a huge success for the club, and has already been utilised by most of our juvenile panels. The following message is from the Under 8 Team:

“The under 8s started back training last Saturday and availed of the Clontarf pitches. Monday night training also commenced this week. Lots of hurling practice this week in advance of the commencement of the indoor hurling event in Gormanston College which starts on Sunday 20th January. There will be 2 slots for the under 8s so plenty of opportunity to practice their hurling.”

Well done to the Under 8 team, and indeed all juvenile teams on their hard work – the future looks bright!
