Ladies A Football
Ballinteer 3-11 Scoil 4-12
A hard fought win secures a Cup Semi Final place for ladies team.
While this was the final game in the round robin stage for both teams, it was essentially a quarter final as the winners would top the group, while the losers faced elimination. Scoil had lost narrowly in a high scoring league game against the same opposition earlier in the summer. With the return of Katie Doolin and Lucy Murphy from their summer sojourns and Hannah Leahy from Dublin duty, hopes were high that the league result could be reversed.
A couple of late changes meant last minute call ups for 14 year old Eve Courtney and a start in goal for Niamh Bunyan. Both players performed creditably and Niamh made a number of fine saves which would have got the approval of big brother, Andy.
As in the league game, both teams traded early scores. Sinead de Burca pounced on a pointed effort which came back off the crossbar to score a goal but the lead was cancelled out immediately with a Ballinteer goal. And again when Sophie Gibney scored another goal the opposition replied straight away with a goal of their own. Just before the break Scoil got the score of the game. Caelinn Ni Bhroin caught a ball in a crowded midfield and passed to Molly Power. Molly surged deep into the opposition half, passed to Naoise Ni Bhroin who flicked to Sophie Gibney who rounded off a great move with a clinical goal.
Straight from the kick out, Caelinn made another great catch ran through on goal but settled for a point to leave Scoil leading at half time 3-7 to 2-8.
The second half was evenly contested but some tenacious defending from the experienced trio of Nicole Rock, Laura O`Reilly and Katie Doolin confined Ballinteer to scores from frees. A typical Hannah Leahy goal secured the victory and Scoil could even afford to miss a penalty and concede a last minute goal from a free kick.
There is no date yet for the Cup Semi Final as there are still some games to be played in the other half of the round robin.
From the players and management, wishing the Ladies B team the best of luck in their Shield Final against St.Brendans tonight!
