Scoil v St. Pat’s Donabate. 5-7-2021

Scoil v St. Pat’s Donabate. an account from the longstanding, “Super Mentor” of Senior Ladies, Niamh Crowe….

The torrential rain on Monday didn’t dampen our girls enthusiasm as they took on St. Pat’s in the opening round of the league.  Heartened by their recent challenge victory against Clontarf they were in excellent form although they knew, from previous experience, they had a stiff opposition in Pats. Added  to that we had barely 13 players as opposed to a twenty plus squad for St. Pats.  Paul Keane (Mentor), cleverly advised the girls that this was to their advantage because their formation wouldn’t be hampered or disturbed by subs coming on. He was right, they kept their places and their composure.

The rain started to ease as the game began and St. Pats got off to a good start with two quick points.  Although our girls tried hard Pats  were the dominant force in the first half which ended with them 8 points ahead at half time. Our girls weren’t fazed though. While still behind on the scoreboard our backs suddenly became a brick wall preventing Pats from scoring. In fact they ensured that Pats got nine wides in a row! There is no doubt but that the support they got from the sideline was enthusiastic to say the least. The spectators shouted encouragement as Sophia absolutely refused to let anyone pass her going towards the goalmouth. Eve, of course used her savvy and know how to support her while Freya showed that protecting a goalmouth runs in the genes. In fact the four under 16 players each put their skills on display time and time again. As we started to reduce the odds against us Therese kept popping up to give good passes while Chloe must have run a marathon along the sideline always where she was needed. Niamh was also totally dependable and slowly we started getting our name on the scoreboard.  Sadhbh had to be seen to be believed as she wound her way straight through the opposition no holds barred.  Abby has now become one of the solid rocks of our team in every game and Monday was no exception.  Meibhin undoubtedly played the game of her life attacking her opposite number with gusto.  Meadhbh always makes surprise interceptions and gets away with the ball and she did this to our advantage on Monday.  Reailtin had her own special way of denying the opposition the ball with some wonderful catches.  If Dublin lose Cluxton I suggest Izzy would do the job based on her unbelievable saves during the game.

The mentors and supporters were breathless as scores from Caoimhe,  Meadhbh, Sadhbh and Abby brought us to within a point of the opposition. Time though was running out. Egged in by the supporters the girls made one last gasp effort and got a penalty.  Of course nobody doubted but that Caoimhe would do the job but still everyone was holding their breath until the ball went bang into the back of the net.  Joy WAS unconfined.

Perhaps the nicest thing of all though was the delight on Liadan’s face as she congratulated her teammates. With hamstring problems she is out of action but travelled the whole way to Donabate to cheer on her friends. That says it all about Scoil girls. They are special.

Final score Pats 3.13 (22)  Scoil 6.06 (24.)

Thank you Niamh Crowe for your fablous match day account and yes it’s true Scoil girls, are special.

Also, great to hear from Jonathan Rock, that the Senior Ladies have secured 3 win’s in a row, with a comfortable win and performance during the week winning against our Neighbouring club Clontarf GAA. #Up Scoil.

Storming Game…

Ballyboughal 2-12 Scoil ui Chonaill 2-13

The Ladies had a very exciting League Cup win in Ballyboughal…. After League Cup draws with Raheny and a narrow defeat to Man O War, the team were seeking a first victory before the League commenced.

In the early stages, Izzy made 2 point blank saves to prevent almost certain goals. However, with Molly and Caelinn on top in midfield, there was a plentiful supply to the forwards and Scoil led at half time 1-9 to 0-7. On resumption, a brilliant solo run by Molly ended with a pinpoint pass to Sophie who calmly slotted to the net to give Scoil an eight point lead.

Spurred on by a vocal support, Ballyboughal came storming into the game and scored 2-3 without reply. The position looked ominous for Scoil, particularly with livewire forward, Sophie Gibney having to go off for treatment. The team showed great resilience and came back into the game and were unlucky to have a goal by Caoimhe Keohane disallowed.

With less than 5 minutes to go, Sophie came back on and scored a point and was instrumental in securing the winning point. The substitutes Eve Courtney, Caoimhe Keohane and Caoimhe de Buitlear also made impacts.

Congrat’s to all and thanks Gus Rock for a Super Account of what sounds like a storming game!
