Kudos to Jack Kennedy… A star on the rise

Huge kudos to Jack Kennedy who played for the Dublin U16 hurlers vs Wexford in the Michael Foley Cup hurling tournament last Saturday, 23 April in Wexford GAA Centre of Excellence.

Jack’s dad, Colm, has been involved in the club since his juvenile days and his two older brothers, Robert and David, play football and hurling for the adult teams. His mum, Ramona looks after all the players registrations, so very much a Scoil family affair!

Jack plays U16 hurling and football with Scoil and won a Féile medal last year. He has done himself (and of course Scoil) very proud.

The very best of luck to Jack and the Dublin U16 hurling team for the season ahead.

We were delighted to be in a position to go ahead with our Annual Easter Camp for our juvenile members – something that has not been possible since 2019. There was over 160 children in attendance and the weather conditions couldn’t have been better over the week.

What a week it was – all children had great fun with their friends while improving on their skills.

A huge thank you to Thomas Gleeson, Club GPO, for organising the camp and an even bigger thank you to all the coaches and volunteers that offered up their time to make the camp possible.

Credit to all children attending – the club grounds were left impeccably clean each day after the camp. A great week all round – well done to everyone.

Ukraine Welcome event

We had fantastic Club support for the event organised for our Ukrainian visitors on Friday 15 April.

A lovely sunny day showed the Club at its best with great support from members across all areas of activity. Our picnic area had a festival feel, thanks to our Gaelic4Mothers & Others (G4M&O), while the treats provided by Olive’s Room, Red Stables and Club members were very welcome for all involved.

The exhibition game had participants from U12 to U16 boys and girls, and was competitive as well as fun for all involved, both players and mentors! The Scoil Hoppers GAA Academy team provided equipment and support to our visitors as well as our young members enjoying the day.

The event concluded with a fun game of Rounders, thanks to the Rounders team. As many people noted, it was a lovely event and an opportunity for Members to meet up for the first time in more than 2 years at a social gathering in the Club. We will keep in touch with the Ukrainian families we met and we were delighted to see some of them attend the Easter Camp last week as a result of the welcome they received.

A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered their time – from the clean up on Thursday evening, getting our young players involved, making tea/coffee, providing Ukrainian translations of key words/phrases, setting up the Club on the day, organising the Easter Egg Hunt, providing colouring sheets, offering transport and being there!

Míle buíochas.

Darkness into Light 2022

Darkness into Light is back for 2022 and will take place on Saturday, 07 May 2022. We have been asked to offer assistance on the morning as we did is 2019. If you kindly volunteered in 2019, it would be great to have you involved again. If you were not involved in 2019, you can get involved in 2022.

To make you aware of the route, the walk starts opposite Casa Pasta on the Seafront, walkers head north to the wooden bridge along the cyclists side (2.5 km) and loop around before the wooden bridge to turn back and walk along the seaside southbound.

Volunteers are required to manage the carpark and direct walkers to the start line, but a number of stewards on the seafront across from the club and around the Baths are also required.

The stewards on the seafront are needed to encourage walkers, ensure they are going in the right direction and be able to contact the first responder team in the event of an emergency.

Please contact Elaine Owens at scoil.pro.eoc@gmail.com if you are in a position to offer any help on the morning or if you have any queries about what is required.

Our U15 Girls Féile na nÓg Journey

This Féile journey is a remarkable story of a bunch of girls that went into competition at Division 3 level in 2021 with a panel of only 13 players. They finished runners up in the league and then went on to win the U14 Division 2 Championship.

Division 1 football for 2022 was always going to be a massive challenge but the addition of an extra 5 players from the U14 panel helped increase the size of the panel, easing the burden of fatigue and injuries.

Our group Féile matches were held in Lucan Sarsfields grounds, at 12th Lock, with our first match against St. Olaf’s.

Scoil Ui Chonaill 2-2 Naomh Olaf 1-4

With a strong wind at their backs for the 1st half of 15 minutes, the girls built up a lead of six points, but after having played Olaf’s in their first league match, they knew that the opposition would come back strong. With some heroic defending and excellent goalkeeping by our youngest squad member, Aoibhinn Geraghty, we managed to come out winners by the narrowest of margins.

Scoil Ui Chonaill 1-1 Lucan Sarsfields 1-2

After losing the toss, we again played with the wind in the first half but this time around we only went into the break leading by two points. To quote the referee “The 2nd half was a pure epic and both teams battled superbly throughout”. With 5 minutes to go, Lucan Sarsfield’s eventually drew level and then took the lead shortly after this. Our girls never dropped the heads and went up the other end to level things in the final 2 minutes. With time nearly up and a draw looking likely Lucan managed to score a point to take victory.

Scoil Ui Chonaill 0-2 Ballyboden St. Enda A 3-2

After the disappointment of the last defeat the girls needed to win this match to get into the semi-final. It was a bridge too far however for our brave girls. We again lost the toss and played with the wind in the first half. Ballyboden packed their defence and in fairness to them, made it very difficult for our girls to score. A couple of breakaway goals in the first half left us with a mountain to climb against the wind. With tired legs the girls battled right to the end but were just outfought by a very good side.

A fantastic occasion and learning experience for all the girls. We are all very proud of each and every one of them. A special mention of thanks to Conrad Cooke our S&C coach and Oran Heron our running coach. These guys have put a lot of work into the girls since early December as preparation for this journey into the top level of U15 Football in Dublin. Thanks lads!

Scoil Ui Chonaill 4-9

Erin’s Isle A 1-4

After an unbeaten campaign with wins over St Marys A, Ballymun Kickhams, St Bridgid’s and O’Dwyer’s, Scoil went into the Final against Isles in good form. The experience of playing in Parnell Park – the lads were encouraged to enjoy every minute. No doubt there will be many more appearances ahead in Scoil colours for this bunch of talented lads.

Scoil started brightly, and encouraged by a great Scoil support, took the lead with two quick goals scored by Alan Murphy and Fionn Daly. A well worked move ended with James Dee coming close to hitting the net. Scoil were dominant in all areas of the pitch and playing with the wind, moved the ball quickly from defence to attack. Further points were added to leave Scoil 2-4 to 0-1 ahead at the break. Scoil’s movement from our kick-outs was excellent and midfield pairing of Diarmuid Murphy and Tiernan Browne won a huge amount of possession following pin point delivery from No.1 Luke Murphy.

Scoil played into the wind in the second half but started the half very well with a well taken goal by Fionn, with his left foot this time. Erin’s Isle took control for the next ten minutes and scored 1-1. With their support very vocal, an excellent save by Luke was quickly followed by a well taken goal by Liam Carr following a forty yard solo run, really ended the game as a contest. Scoil added a couple of well taken points to complete an excellent performance. Rafa was solid as a rock at full back and made a number of timely interceptions, while Conor Maher dropped back into defence to ensure no more goals were going to be conceded. Our defence was solid throughout with Nathan Oates, Neil and Conal McCartaigh working tirelessly throughout while Oran Rowley kept his man at bay. Alex Courtney had an excellent second half on the lively Isles No.10 while Daniel Flynn put in a big shift tracking up and down the pitch.

The cup was presented to Captain, Luke who thanked the parents and Erin’s Isle for the contest. It was back to the Clubhouse for some pizza and light refreshments!

Next up for these boys is the Feile hurling final on Saturday at 11am in UCD.

Scoil: Luke Murphy, Neil, Rafa, Oran, Conal, Nathan, Alex, Diarmuid, Tiernan, Daniel, Fionn, Liam, James, Conor, Alan.

Adam for James, Fahad for Daniel, Ronan for Oran, Ruairi for Liam, Aurelian for Fionn.

The U10s boys are continuing to play Go Games in both hurling and football.

The team is developing really well, and the team spirit and fun they all have as a group is very evident.
