Club Irish Language and Cultural Officers Corner (Oifigeach Cultúir agus Teanga) – Meet Ruairí Colbert

Ruairí Colbert here. I am the clubs Irish Language and Cultural Officer or Oifigeach Cultúir agus Teanga.

My role is to provide advice to the Club’s officers in supporting the National Language and Culture as well as actively promoting the Irish language within the Club.

I would count myself lucky in that I got a primary education as Gaeilge and love the Irish culture and music. My kids now go to a Gaelscoil and play Irish traditional music and are active members of the Scoil Hoppers, U10 & U12 boys team. Below is a summary of the events in the club to promote the Irish culture.

Scór

Scór is a GAA competition that combines all the colour and rivalry of Gaelic Games with the social/fun element of Ireland’s traditional past-times. The competition was established by the GAA in 1969, with the aim of promoting Ireland’s traditional pastimes and culture while offering club members the chance to meet up, have fun and represent their club during the winter months while Football and Hurling had ceased.

There are eight events/disciplines in Scór that cover all aspects of Irish culture: Figure/Céilí Dancing, Solo Singing, Ballad Group, Recitation/Scéalaíocht, Nuachleas/Novelty Act, Instrumental Music, Set Dancing and Table Quiz. The competition is divided into two age levels, Scór na nÓg, for young people under 17 and Scór Sinsir, for those over 17.

Just like the All-Ireland Football and Hurling Championships, clubs taking part in Scór first run off competitions among the club’s own members with the winners going forward to Divisional/District Board stage where deemed necessary, and then on to the County Final. The winners go on to the Provincial final and finally on to the All-Ireland Final.

The Dublin Scór Na nÓg finals were hosted by Fingallians.  We entered the Tráth na gCeisteanna competition and the team consisted of Rian Colbert, Conor O’Flaherty, Eoin Kelly and Liam Ó hAonghusa.  The boys really enjoyed the competition. I have big plans for next years Scór Na nÓg…

Scór Sinsir will take place in September and we would like to enter a number of events particularly the Tráth na gCeisteanna, watch this space for more info…..

The Gaelic4Girls 2022 programme was launched earlier in the month and we were delighted to be part of the launch.

We welcomed leading inter-county stars Emma Duggan (Meath), Jennifer Higgins (Roscommon), Aimee Mackin (Armagh) and Laurie Ryan (Clare) to the club to launch the 2022 Glenveagh Homes Gaelic4Girls programme.

The four players are Glenveagh Homes Gaelic4Girls ambassadors and are ready to share their tips and experience during the roll-out of the 2022 programme, which will have 35 clubs from Britain and Ireland benefiting.

The girls offered advise and gave tips to our young members and spoke about their road to becoming inter-county players.

Looking forward to some great games in the months to come and who knows, we may have a future star among the young girls that took part in the launch.

Team News

Under 10s Boys Team

The U10s boys are playing in a two team league this year and to date have played Round Towers of Lusk in football, St Brigids in football and hurling, and St Peters of Garristown in football.

All games were very competitive, and the boys played really well, demonstrating excellent skills in both codes. The team is developing really well, and the team spirit and togetherness is very evident.

This weekend we welcome Raheny, and the boys will be really up for this local derby game as some of their classmates play for Raheny. Scoil ABÚ.

New Members always welcomed. Contact Ruairí at 0867712848

Under 8 Girls

Well done to all our U8 girls on their first official match away to Naomh Mearnog on an early Mothers Day morning. They had great fun, while improving their skills in perfect playing conditions

Under 15 Boys

Three wins from three for our Féile footballers with impressive performances against Ballymun Kickhams, St Mary’s and Brigids A, gives the lads a home Féile semi-final against O’Dwyers at 12.15pm in the club on Sunday, please come out and support the lads.

Our hurlers are also unbeaten with wins over Fingallian’s and St Vincent’s, leaving the last match against Ballinteer to decide who will top the group but the lads are guaranteed a semi-final spot.

Under 16 Boys

Monday night hurling training has been going well with Tommy putting the lads through their paces.

The lads have started their league campaign impressively with wins over Faughs and Na Fianna, with Lucan up next at home in the club on Saturday at 3.30pm.

Our footballers are also unbeaten after wins over Round Towers Lusk and Kilmacud away last Saturday, in hot conditions out in Silver Park. Up next, away trip to Balbriggan next Thursday night!

Camogie News

The U14 Camogie team had a great win over Clontarf B earlier in the month. The girls showed great spirit and demonstrated superb skill. Well done to all the girls and the team mentors. The future is looking very bright.

Camogie Committee

If you would like to get involved in the rebuilding and continued development of our camogie section, we would be delighted to have you on board.

Your contribution, no matter how small, will make a big difference to the success of the club.

Scoil Workshops

A huge thank you to Thomas, for hosting 2 workshops for coaches and parents with a focus on hurling and camogie skills. The first was held on Friday, 11th March with a follow on session held on 25th March. Both workshops were well attended and plenty of tips taken away. The future of hurling and camogie in the club is looking positive.

Well done to Ellen Keane

A huge congratulations to Ellen Keane on reaching the final of Dancing with the Stars.

What can we say that has not already been said – the performances that she delivered each week were outstanding. She not only did herself and her family proud, but the wider community in the area. A girl with many hidden talents…

We look forward to welcoming Ellen back to Scoil in the near future.

Well done again Ellen

Famous GAA Quote

I love Cork so much that if I caught one of their hurlers in bed with my missus, I’d tiptoe downstairs and make him a cup of tea.
